Help Wanted: Chapter Leaders Needed |
The Duluth Area Chapter is actively seeking Thrivent Financial members who live in the Duluth, Hermantown, Proctor, Floodwood and Saginaw areas to serve on the 2009 leadership board. The three following current chapter leaders will fulfill their four-year consecutive term limit this December: --Financial Director --Communications Director --Community Service Team DirectorA term runs from January 1 to December 31 of each calendar year. Members who serve on the chapter leadership board in an elected board position for four consecutive years are not eligible to serve on the board in an elected leadership board position for two years, according to the Thrivent Financial chapter constitution. Chapter leaders are responsible for recruiting successors to the board. Information about the specific responsibilities and qualifications for these positions is posted on the Meet the Chapter Leaders page on this website. If you are interested in serving on the chapter board, or would like to suggest a name, please email Chapter Vice President Erin Thrond.

| Ground-Breaking for Thrivent Builds House |
|
|
About 20 people were on hand for the May 31 ground-breaking of the Thrivent Builds/Habitat for Humanity house at 418 East 7th Street in Duluth. Ritual gold-painted shovels were raised in unison to celebrate the construction phase for the first Thrivent house in Duluth. What makes this project unique is that building costs for this house will be primarily covered by Thrivent, who is committed to 65 percent. The local Habitat affiliate is responsible for 25 percent of the cost and the remaining 10 percent (about $8,000) will be covered by local contributions raised primarily by Thrivent members and local Lutheran churches. Lutherans -- lots of Lutherans -- are needed to help with construction and additional fundraising. To date, more than $4,000 has been raised. Watch your mail for an invitation to a summer barbeque fundraiser at the build site. The foundation will be poured later this month, with framing set to begin in early August. Get involved -- attend a fundraiser or help pound nails! |

Carol is a member of Gloria Dei where she serves in various positions. She is chair of the Service & Witness Committee, a member of Christopher Ministry, Altar Guild and Health Cabinet. Carol volunteers with numerous community organizations and often holds positions of responsibility. She is co-chair of the Lutheran Social Service Circle of Hope, Vice President of Friends of the Library, membership chairman for the Duluth Area Retired Teachers Association, and involved with WELCA, Port Cities Luncheon Committee, American Association of University Women, Delta Kappa Gamma and Churches United in Ministry (CHUM). 2008 Regional Award Winner: Mary Felknor |
Award recipient in Adult Category. |
Mary is a member of Hope in Floodwood where she volunteers with the Befrienders Program, which brings communion to shut-ins. She is a go-getter who, despite some mobility challenges, is always looking out for others. Mary has a special interest in senior citizens. She drives a group of senior women and their pets to a neighboring community for pet-grooming services several times each year. Mary doesn't own a pet, but she has a van! Mary often volunteers at the Floodwood Senior Citizens Club. Her enthusiasm is contagious and when she sees a need in the community, knows how to motivate people to get involved. What's important to Mary is helping people, whether or not she has a personal stake in a situation. She has organized numerous fundraisers -- often to meet medical needs -- and has served as one of her church's Thrivent congregational coordinators for many years. Contented Critters Sanctuary in Makinen received a $250 contribution from Thrivent Financial on behalf of Mary.

2008 Regional Award Winner: Jessica Brisbin |
Award recipient in Families with Children Category. |
Jessica has served as an elected leader of the chapter board since 2005. In her role, she has worked at helping Thrivent service teams complete and submit CAIC funding requests to the chapter leadership board.Last year, she served as Vice President but also assumed the duties of community service team director when that position wasn't filled. She knew how Thrivent's CAIC program impacted people in the community and did not want the chapter to miss out on opportunities to serve others. Jessica volunteers as a Sunday School teacher at Holy Cross where she also coordinates the annual church picnic, is a committee member for the annual Fall Fest, co-chairs the food drive and coordinated the Adopt-a-Family project. She also works a water station for Grandma's Marathon and coordinates a neighborhood Adopt-a-Highway project. In addition, Jessica is the mother of a busy pre-schooler and works full-time outside her home. Despite her schedule, she freely gives of her time and talents, putting the needs of others before her own. Animal Allies received a $250 contribution from Thrivent Financial on behalf of Jessica. | |
