Calling All Gardeners…

Over the past few years, Sue Williams has built some beautiful gardens on the Bowling Street side of the church. It was a long cold winter, but now it’s time to get out there and get our hands dirty! If you would like to help rake out the flower beds (we have lots of stuff coming up), call the church office and we’ll try to organize a Saturday morning or afternoon that works for everyone that’s interested.

VENDOR FAIR AND BAKE SALE COMING THIS FALL!

The Women of Hope’s second annual Vendor Fair and Bake Sale will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2008. Registration forms are available in the kiosk. If you, or anyone you know, have a home based business and would like to participate be sure to pick up a form and turn it in as soon as possible. The fee is $25 per table with an additional fee of $5 for electricity. We will need lots of baked goods so start planning those goodies now. There will also be a lunch available.

Evangelical Lutheran Worship 2007
The new Red ELCA Hymnals are available for purchase for $20.00. They can be donated to Hope in memory of or in honor of a loved one. Checks should be made payable to Hope Lutheran. If you are interested in ordering a Hymnal, forms are available thru the office or in the kiosk in the narthex.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY Our prayer shawl ministry has gotten off to a good start. We have three women from Hope joining the women at Gloria Dei once a month. We encourage others to join us. If we get enough people to join us we will start meeting at Hope Lutheran. Take time to check out the display in the narthex. There are brochures and shawl instructions for you to take, samples of the card that is given to the shawl recipient and a sample shawl. If you knit or crochet and would like to participate in this wonderful ministry, feel free to pick up some instructions and start a shawl. We are also taking donations to purchase supplies to help offset the expense of the shawls. If you wish to make a donation or have any other questions feel free to contact Nancy Coffman @ 396-0387, Betty Nelson @ 362-0721, or Rhonda Taschner @ 363-5789.

Going on vacation? Can't make church this weekend? Make it easy on yourself and check out the Simply Giving Program. This program allows you to have your offering automatically withdrawn from your checking account. This is perfect especially during the summer months when attendance is down because everyone is so busy. If this sounds like a good time saver for you, contact the church office or Betty Nelson and they will get the paperwork needed to get you set up.

Angel Food Ministries
Angel Food Program!

What is Angel Food Ministries?
This ministry began in 1994 in Monroe, Georgia. A group of Christians realized that there were many food companies that had an overstock of food. These people asked if they could buy the overstock at a reduced price and resell it to help the hungry. These companies eagerly agreed. The companies got rid of their overstock and the hungry were helped. Good business, good stewardship and good publicity!

One Half Million Families Fed in November 2006! In the first 11 months of 2006, more families have been fed than the first 11 years of our ministry! You can learn more about Angel Food Ministries by visiting their website at www.angelfoodministries.com.

How Does the Program Work?
Every month congregations that are involved take orders two weeks before delivery from those who wish to participate. Each order costs $30. Orders must be paid for in advance. Cash and Food Stamps are accepted. No checks.

THIS IS IMPORTANT! Everyone, regardless of his or her financial status is encouraged to participate. Even if you’re wealthy you are encouraged to participate. The money you pay for the food you receive goes back into the ministry and $1 from every package goes into the benevolence budget of the congregation sponsoring the program. You can order as many packages as you wish.

Approximately two weeks after the order is placed, the food is delivered to our church. This would be a Saturday mornings in our case. The food is sorted and boxed. The people who ordered the food pick up the food from 9:45 to 11:45 that same morning.

How Does This Help the Poor?
Several ways:
1) People with limited incomes can get a good amount of food for a lot less than they could buy it at the grocery store. (Yes, we have quite a few members of our congregation who could truly benefit from this program, to say nothing of the many other people in our surrounding neighborhood.)
2) For people who can’t afford to buy this package the Church Council has approved using the money from Coffee Hour to buy as many orders as we can. Pastor Dan would then distribute the food to those who need it. (Money would be held back to continue to buy the coffee, etc we need for Coffee Hour.)
3) Different groups or individuals in the congregation can order packages to be given to those in need.
4) For every 50 orders an addition order is given to the congregation.

If after you see how smoothly Distribution Day runs and you want to volunteer your time to help out with the process, please call the church office at 365-3105 or Pastor Dan 350-5484.

Think of how many people we will be able to help in our community through this outreach program. Think of how we can answer Christ’s call to, “Feed my Sheep”, not only with food, but once we have a chance to meet them and hopefully get to know them, we can feed them in all the other ways they need. Think of how, through working to help others through this program, this Christmas, and the rest of this year, can be the most meaningful that you and your family has ever had!

And Now a Word from our Pastor...
How to Get Your Family to Worship Services

Augsburg Publishing has just put out a new book entitled, “The Christian Handbook”. This book talks about all the different things that a church going Christian needs to know, not merely theology, doctrine and the like, but really important, everyday things like the title of this article suggests. For the next couple of months I’m going to give you a taste of what’s in the book and hopefully you’ll buy one and maybe in the Fall we can use it as the basis for our Adult Forum Class!

Rounding up family members and getting them from home to pew can be one of the most difficult things you ever do. Here are some of the common problems families have to deal with.

1) Children – I’ve heard many parents say, “It’s just too hard to get the kids ready in time for church on Sunday. We’ll wait until our children get older, when they’re better behaved, have a longer attention span, and when they’re better able to understand what’s going on. Then we’ll bring them to church.” While I don’t doubt the sincerity of this statement in any way, shape or form, real life doesn’t work that way. Anyone who’s had to deal with a tired, cranky adolescent, who spends more time in front of a mirror than an anorexic super model, knows it doesn’t work that way! It’s hard, infuriating, thankless, never ending work, that takes so much physical and emotional energy, that by the time you finally get to church your either ready to collapse or start breaking a large number of the 10 Commandments. (After all, God will forgive you if you ask, right? When you reach this point simply repeat this phrase, “I’ll go to jail if I kill them, I’ll go to jail if I kill them…") But waiting until Kindergarten, or what is more popular today, until they reach Confirmation age, simply puts off the inevitable, and it makes it less likely the kids will actually absorb what they need to know about God. Doubt that last sentence is true? Then wait until a child is 5 or 12 years old, until they’re better behaved, have a longer attention span and are better able to understand what’s going on before you begin teaching them to read and see how well that works out. As hard as it is the only answer is to “bring’em early and bring’em often”! You can also try Saturday at 6:00 p.m.!!!

2) The Weather – “We were planning on coming, but the weather was just too bad!” Believe me I understand this reason for not coming. If I wasn’t the pastor and I didn’t live just a block and a half away there would be times I wouldn’t make it to church either! And of course, people should never come if the weather makes traveling dangerous. But I’ve also noticed that sometimes we can take this a little too far. We say that we don’t come to worship because it was snowing, or raining, or too hot, or too cold, or it was so nice out that we didn’t want to spend it indoors! When you sift through all of this, I figure there are about two weekends a year when the temperature is about 40 degrees, (not too hot, or too cold, or too nice), and it’s not raining or snowing that will allow folks to worship. Seriously here’s a good rule of thumb to follow. Think of something you like to do; bowling, fishing, shopping, going to the movies, and ask yourself this question, “Would I let the weather keep me from doing those things”? If the answer is yes, don’t come to worship. If the answer is no…

3) It’s Too Boring – I’ll let you in on a little secret, “I get bored sometimes too”! There have been times when I’ve had to stifle a yawn while I’ve been preaching one of my own sermons! But to be honest, I don’t know how much I can do to change the fact that sometimes worship can be boring. I promise I’ll work as hard as I can not to be boring, but I have to be realistic. After all, the average budget for a half hour situation comedy on T.V. is $500,000. With that they hire writers, directors, producers, set designers, professional actors, etc. They only produce on the average 25 shows a year, compared to 52 a year, (not counting repeats Sunday, and Wednesdays, and special attractions Thanksgiving, Christmas, Lent, etc), here at Hope. And yet with all those resources the average sit-com lasts about two years, because people get bored with it. I know there are congregations that put on a pretty good show, but after a while the novelty will wear off and people simply go to another place with a different show, and after awhile the novelty wears off and… The truth is, no amount of money, creativity, hard work, or anything else will ever be enough to keep us entertained in this world that is constantly coming up with newer and flashier ways of attracting our attention. What it really comes down to is this, the purpose of worship is “worshipping God” not being entertained! God has created us, provided for us, loves us, forgives us, and promises us eternal life. We come to worship to hear that simple message over and over, and to say thank you to God. I know, sometimes it’s sincerely terribly hard to get the kids ready, get out in bad weather, and even stay awake once we get here. But we were all taught when we were little that saying thank you isn’t something we do only when it’s easy. Saying thank you is the right thing to do, especially when it’s hard. I know, I know, this sounds terribly old fashioned doesn’t it? But then, so does everything that really matters. Some things don’t change.

In Christ’s Name,
Pastor Dan
