The Missionaries
Reverend John and Maila Davies

Pastor John with a Kobon neighbor
John's career began as an attorney practicing in Manchester and Liverpool (the city of his birth), England. Moving to the United States and becoming a U.S. citizen, he began a new career in 1972 as a missionary member of Lutheran Bible Translators and Wycliffe Bible Translators. He was assigned to language analysis, Bible translation and Literacy work in Papua New Guinea. Through the years he continued his own education, earning first a Master of Arts in Humanities (Linguistics)from the University of Texas at Arlington, then a Master of Philosophy (Linguistics) from Cambridge University in England. In 1988 Cambridge awarded him his PhD (Linguistics). After attending seminary and serving a vicarage between tours of duty in Papua New Guinea, he was ordained as a Pastor in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in 2004.
Pastor John is an unsalaried missionary with Lutheran World Missions.
Maila Tellervo Davies was born and educated in Finland. She earned a Master of Theology degree at the University of Helsinki. Maila met her husband, John, at a missionary conference.
Maila and John moved to Papua New Guinea in 1972 and established their home among the Kobon people, raising their children there, and giving medical help to the people as they worked on developing an alphabet for the previously unwritten Kobon language.

A warm welcome for Maila
