Newsletter for LWML
September2007
This newsletter is sent to you to communicate the news of the Akron-Youngstown zone of the LWML. Please publish and distribute. Perhaps you will hang it on a bulletin board, edit and include it in a church newsletter, make copies and give to individuals or…use it however you feel is best to tell folks of the mission of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.
Sioux Fall, South Dakota
Did you miss it? Read on to hear the opinions of some who attended.
Our Akron-Youngstown Zone President Doreen Inglis, Redeemer, Austintown, shares these memories.
What did you do on your summer vacations? Remember when you were asked that when school started in September? My summer vacation was highlighted by a trip to South Dakota-the 65th Anniversary LWML Convention.
I want to share with you my overall feeling of this, the eighth LWML convention I have been privileged to attend. Thinking for a couple of days since this assignment has brought many images to mind and many feelings. Each convention gathering has been different, different in location, different hosts who use their own local flair, different themes and different entertainment. But they are also the same – Christ centered, with everything planned and carried out to His Glory. They are inspirational – the theme is chosen with a purpose and a message, they are Mission focused from the ingathering of hundreds of gifts that serve people we will never know to the many speakers from the mission board letting us know the impact our mites have made around the world. It’s hard to explain the feeling of knowing what God does with those pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and currency from Akron, Youngstown, Hudson, Mt. Hope, North Canton, Steubenville, Warren, Mantua, Cuyahoga Falls, Kent, Tallmadge, North Jackson and Wooster. Get the picture? The sacrificial and prayerful giving , no matter the size, has made a difference to God’s people around the world.
Highlights of the convention are in the fall Quarterly and the ODE. Read them and get a sense that you belong to the LWML, a group helping each woman in her relationship with our Triune God. The Bible studies, speakers and leaders at conventions are like a booster shot to fortify us and build us up for our relationship and service to our Lord.
Linda Reiser, past president of LWML said it so well in her speech, “The success of LWML is not because of our work and programs but because of the Great God that we serve and His faithfulness to us.” He and He alone receives all the Glory.
Following find thoughts from Nancy Schubert, Faith, Kent, who attended as a guest.
From the first step into the City Arena to the final sad “good-bye” we were filled with ROCK analogies that kept us “Resting on Christ the King”. Such a glorious time and such wonderful experiences. The Thursday night service was so God pleasing and so filled with the Holy Spirit. There was music being sung by over 5000 people, a choir of about 400, a message to increase one’s faith, and Holy Communion helping all to remember this service.
The fun of rooming with fellow LWMLers, the rush to eat, the wonderful smiles and greetings from all those women, the snacks brought by roomies, the vivacious teens, the competent YWRs, the huge gathering of youngsters who came with parents and were enrolled in “camp”, the side trips to enjoy Sioux Falls which is known for its lack of crime and its friendly people, the days of work done by those in charge of this convention, the dedication of those leaving office and the enthusiasm of those coming into office, the Heart to Heart Sisters, the missionaries, the pastors who attended and gave so much to the gathering, and on and on. Yes, there were service projects and new MITE goals along with Bible studies and comic relief by Jan Struck. Too much to mention, so plan to attend our next Ohio District convention in 2008 and the next LWML Convention in 2009. You won’t be disappointed!
What comes to mind when you hear someone say “Rock On”? Do you envision teens talking? Do you think, “What kind of slang is that?” How about over 5000 women of the LWML calling out, “Rock On”? as you Rest On Christ the King! This is exactly what the women at the convention in Sioux Falls, SD did last June. They truly reflected the convention goal statement of Secure in Jesus, my rock and fortress, I step out in faith to declare His praise and serve others.
Each day of the convention offered many opportunities to “Rock On”. Servant events, choir practices, singing with all in attendance, Bible studies, missionary speakers, generous giving with 3 offerings raising more than $181,000, and voting for the 18 projects to support the mission goad of $1,700,000 for 2007-2009.
I was very impressed with the commitment level of the LWML women on both an individual and group level. It was very spiritually uplifting to attend this convention and to be encouraged to “Rock On” in the service of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
October 13 All day RETREAT for the entire zone.
This October Saturday will find you at Tallmadge Lutheran, Tallmadge from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A myriad of activities will include: coffee, a get acquainted activity, our Counselor Pastor Johnson’s devotion, our presenter Ruth Koenig from Gloria Dei, small group discussion, prayer, a salad lunch, group singing, personal devotion time, mite offering, break out time and JOY in the LORD as we Rest On Christ the King.
There will be a servant event of marking Bibles which will be funded by your registration fees which will be determined after the Bibles are purchased. Each church in attendance is asked to bring 2 salads to serve 10 or 12 people.
In the near future there will be more information so that you know how to pre-register. Right now, just mark your calendars to reserve that day for faith building, fellowship and servant activities.
Attend the October 13 Retreat!!
· The yearly cost of printing and distributing the ODE and the Quarterly is $5.00 per lady. In your MITE box offering, try to give an extra $5.00 and mark it “subscription cost” so that is separated from mites.
· Our zone will host the Ohio District Convention in 2012.
· When using a search engine on the internet, use
www.goodsearch.com and choose charity of LWML. We get money after so many “hits”.· LWML SUNDAY – Traditional date is the first Sunday in October. Your pastor has received the material. Have you ordered what you need? Banner started? Plans being made? Such a good time to begin a new method of gathering MITES. Maybe the “never spend a dime again” method using a sock to fill at home or a container at church in the Narthex where prayer suggestions could be posted. Encourage folks to have more than one mite box. Sometimes a box is kept in the car for loose change. At times boxes are next to the washer for receiving change that was not removed from trouser pockets. How about next to the phone to receive a “toll” for each unnecessary call placed?
Have a wonderful time planning and “producing” your LWML Sunday.
Plan to attend the retreat on Oct. 13 at Tallmadge Lutheran, Tallmadge.
