Since
the time of Martin Luther, the Lutheran Church has been known as "the
singing church." Our worship and celebrations have been enriched
by a priceless collection of liturgies, choral works, and hymns through
which we express our faith.
As a tribute to that rich history, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans
has created "Celebrating the Musical Heritage of the Lutheran Church"-
a compilation of five CDs, an interactive CD-ROM and a 50-page booklet
highlighting the music of Lutherans from the 16th through the 20th centuries.
The collection was provided by Thrivent Financial to Lutheran congregations and select institutions. It is no longer available.
This site is a condensed compliment to the limited-edition compact-disc
set. These resources were created to help Lutheran congregations and educational
institutions honor and celebrate this tradition.
While this site contains a wealth of resources and information, we encourage
you to visit your Lutheran congregation or educational institution if
you would like to review the entire limited-edition compact-disc collection.
Within this site you will find:
Key remarks from respected music experts
Dozens of audio samples from the most famous composers from each century
Background and detail information to provide perspective and context
Photographs and/or artwork from each time period
Although not all resources from the compact-disc set are duplicated here,
you will find musical samples, historical information and expert commentary
valuable as you learn more about Lutheran Heritage and Lutheran music's
role over the past 500 years.
We hope that pastors, ministers of music, choral directors, worship coordinators,
music teachers, and students will use these resources to deepen their
own appreciation for this remarkable musical heritage and to carry this
tradition forward to future generations.
