| Ash Wednesday night service
As a Vicar at a mission church in Trussville, Alabama I was humbled with
the privilege of placing the sign of the cross on our members foreheads.
I looked into their eyes and saw their tears and their humility of
coming to the altar rail and returning to their seats. The parents were
so proud to bring forth their small children to have the cross placed
upon their foreheads. I too had to fight back the tears. We are a small
church in Alabama and we have been bleessed with overwhelmng growth in
an area of the country where the LCMS is quite small in numbers. Our
congregation is excited to worship each Wednesday during Lent and to
share a Lenten meal(we have great cooks). We worship in our sanctuary
where a five foot cross hangs from the rafters. As we received the cross
on our forehead on Ash Wednesday, on Sundays we hear the message of the
Cross and the great gift Christ offered us through His death and
ressurection.

| oil and ashes
The ashes placed on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday are mingled with oil.
In the same way, the Holy Spirit is with us always, though we ourselves
are but dust and ashes.

| The penitence of Lent
After experiencing a very humbling Ash Wednesday service this evening, I
feel it is time to reflect on what I can give back to God. He blesses me
so selflessly that I need to give him the Glory more and more.

| Ash Wednesday & Lent
"I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ". The Ashes placed on my
forehead on Ash Wednesday by my pastor is my witness to others about my
faith. Thanks be to God for His journey to Golgatha. I am a redeemed
child of God!
