Lent

I was raised Catholic and have been used to fasting during Lent. When I remarried I converted to the Lutheran faith as a gift to my wife so we could all go to the same church. I have continued to fast during Lent as a sacrifice to God, not because I have to, because I want to. It seems like a small thing for me to do a few Fridays a year considering what Jesus did for me. It's gets me in the spirit of making sacrifices not only to God, but for my wife, the kids, etc.

Lent

I eat meat on Fridays but on Wednesdays during Lent I usually either fast the whole day drinking only water or I eat only fruits and vegetables and drink only water. This year I'm eating only fruits and vegetables on Wednesdays during Lent.

Lent

It certainly was not my intent to cause anyone distress or question another's religious faith. My first comment was meant in a light vein because as you can see from the responses, giving up meat on Fridays is something rarely done by Lutherans and except for Lent, it isn't required for Catholics any longer.

If I gave offense to anyone, again I apologize.

Not all Baptists are the same...

It might help to know that the name Baptist refers to a number of denominations here in America. Southern Baptists are not the same as Missionary Baptists, and there are several other varieties as well...kinda like Lutherans, eh? Furthermore, not every congregation follows the doctrines of its leadership to the letter, and each one will have various traditions unique to itself. So it is very possible to have a Baptist church that celebrates Lent and Holy Week in its entirety, while another in the same city does not.
Hope this cools things down a little...my monitor was about to catch fire!

Lent

I know that Christ died for my sins and the sins of all people. Why does anyone have to bring up "other" churches and what they do or do not do. I have been told by a Lutheran pastor once that my family will not go to heaven because they were not Lutheran. Yes I do take offense to that because that pastor had never met my family, nor did he know what was in their heart. Please do not counsel me because I know my Savior died for me and all people.

Lent

C'mon Carol. Lighten up. Shar is right, there are very few reformed churches that hold Wednesday services. She never said Lutherans are the only "good" Christians. Those are your words, and why are you so defensive? What are your issues?
There are no "good" Christians anyway. If there were, there would be no need for Lent and no need for Christ to have died for us.

God Bless you both.

Lent

I don't mean it to sound like that at all. But I live in an area surrounded by Baptists and none of them hold Lenten services, Maundy Thursday or Good Friday.

I am sorry if I offended you.

I use to be Baptist, and we ALWAYS Celebrated Lenten Services, along with Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. I wish YOU would get your information straight before you make statements like that. These statements make it sound like Lutherans are the ONLY good Christian People!

Lent

I have never known anyone of the Baptist faith that actually celebrates Lent. They do not hold Lenten, Maundy Thursday or Good Friday services. It is not something that is practiced by the Baptists.

It is normally the Lutherans, Catholics and Episcopal and probably the Orthodox churches that celebrate Lent.

Meat on Friday during Lent

Many people do something special during Lent as an act of repentance. Just because someone choses to not eat meat on Friday during Lent does not mean they follow the Catholic religion. Even Baptist, Methodist, etc. have taken up the practice of giving up something for Lent - this does not mean they are no longer Baptist or Methodist.
