Folding the flag

I have been at several military events when the flag was folded and a reading was done for each fold of the flag. It is very impressive.

Having been a Boy Scout in my youth, we learned how to properly fold the US Flag, and it is done as already noted. The fold produces the shape of a tri-cornered hat, which was commonly worn by the Revolutionaries. Also, when folded properly, just four stars will appear on the face. There's a good explanation online here:

Regarding furled flags: Canadian Boy Scouts furl their flag. I only saw it at a jamboree once, so I don't know the process, but they raised the furled flag to the top of the pole and then unfurled it. I suspect that a slip knot in the lanyard did this, and I must say it was rather impressive to see the flag open that way. Raising the US Flag was always a two-person job, because you had to unfold it to attach it to the lanyard and support it as it was being raised to avoid having it touch the ground.

'fold' or furl'?

To furl a flag is to roll it up. However, there is a proper way to -fold- our flag, which I learned as a child...I think in Girl Scouts, although our Social Studies books in school also demonstrated the method. This folding is done by two of the honor guard at military funerals: first, they fold the flag lengthwise; lengthwise again; then, beginning at the stripes end, one soldier makes a triangular fold, then a straight fold, then a triangular, then a straight, until the entire flag is tightly folded into a triangle with the stars facing out. This flag is then given to a surviving family member as a memento. At our school, it was always two of our Boy Scouts who took the flag down at the end of the day and folded it like that.
