Start of school
School in Florida always starts mid to late August and gets out mid to
late May. The main reason for it is, I think, a good one. That is so
that the kids can have their mid-term exams prior to Christmas vacation.
With the later school start, they have to come back and take the exams
two weeks later. In Florida it also makes sense because August is one
of our hottest months, and kids usually aren't outside, etc., so they're
better off learning in an air conditioned atmosphere. In May, the
weather is much nicer.

Should school start before or after Labor Day?
After Labor Day, all you all. The comments posted so far make good
points; however, here are mine, too. I can remember when temps were so
hot I couldn't concentrate on the studies at hand. All I could think of
was getting somewhere cool. The same can be said for when it was so
cold that we had to wear our coats et al during school. My parents
would not have been able to pay for my sports equipment--we were too
poor. Driver's ed was free. I would not be able to pay for it today at
the prices they charge now. One of my kids is a school vice principal.
Her paycheck is arranged so that her annual salary is spread out over 12
months. Thus, she gets a paycheck all year 'round. I just heard
yesterday that educators are paying attention to one project where the
teachers were paid more money and their children's skill levels
increased dramatically. We want teachers to be surrogate parents in all
aspects of life these days but we don't want to pay them enough just for
teaching the three Rs. It should be the parents' responsibility to
provide opportunities for the child to keep his/her skill level up
during the summer through such things as reading, making change at a
store, gardening, etc. I don't think we allow our children to just be
children any more; we try to turn them into little adults.

School days
I'm gonna get flak for saying this, but school should be year-round,
with a few small (as in week-long) breaks to break up the year. They
could be done at Christmas, Easter, Independence Day, and Thanksgiving
(the dates for the Thanksgiving and Easter holidays would move with
those holidays).
The benefit of this would be that kids would learn more and better,
since they would not have 3 months to forget what they learned the other
9; and the teachers would get a better deal too, since their paychecks
wouldn't be cut off for three months.
For those who protest that summer is the only chance for a teacher to
take classes to stay "qualified," I would say that I have long believed
that school districts should pay for those "update" classes, as well as
paying the teacher normal salary while she is taking them. Teachers
could easily be rotated on a staggered schedule so they can get in their
needed studies. Or perhaps the courses could be taken online.
And to the other objection, "How can the school districts afford all
this?" I say, eliminate the "extras." Make the sports teams pay for
their own equipment (hey, car-wash fundraisers and bake sales still
work, y'all); take the computers out of elementary classrooms and make
the kids learn from books again; plant plain old grass on the grounds
rather than all the sophisticated landscaping (unless it is done as a
science project by the kids); leave the floors bare linoleum instead of
carpeting. There are plenty more ways to cut corners without
short-changing the kids or the teachers.

First day of school
The first day of school should be after labor day. What is with all
the Early out days and the half day on the first day in some places. Now
I understand why my crew takes off early somedays and come late others
Some of them come late and leave early on the same day. One told me
that she did not want to be late twice in one day. I asked her what she
was talking about. She said " i was late coming to work I do not want to
be late going home. Go figure
