In the old days...

That's true, Shar...but in the Old Days when I was a kid in a poor family (there were five in all--three kids), Mom did all the dishes until we got old enough to help. We took our turns doing the dishes ourselves by the time I was in sixth grade.
When there was a big meal like Thanksgiving to be cooked, Mom kept a sink full of soapy water to soak the pots and pans that got cleaned as she went along. Most of the rest of the year, we ate one-dish meals, we never used place settings, and we used our same plates for eating our meal, salad (in summer) and dessert. So maybe it was a little different for us. If you did it by The Book of Table Setting, that would automatically make more dishes.
How did your parents manage? Did they have a mechanical dishwasher, or were you kids drafted in to do them?
P.S. I wonder if dishwashing time gave couples some conversation time as well, while one spouse washed and one dried and stacked?

Dishwashers

You don't wash them, but usually you want to rinse any large particles off to keep it from going down the drain. Some dishwashers do a better job than others and just a little scraping will do.

Dish washer

I thought the dish washer was to wash the dishes. What wash them before you wash them what is that all about

Dishwashers

Perelandra, that's true if you're a family of one. But if you're a family of six or seven as we once were, a dishwasher can't be beat.

I AM the dishwasher!

...which means I -soak- any problem dishes before they are washed.
I honestly don't see how a mechanical dishwasher could do a better job than I do, especially with the silverware. And it takes me less time, too--pan-scrubbing and all.

Dishwashers

I likely wouldn't rinse my dishes if my landlord would buy anything but the absolute cheapest appliances possible. El Cheapo models simply do not clean like the others. You get what you pay for. Except in rent, that is... and I'm trying to figure out a way out of that. :)
