Attend The Games

I believe we, as a nation, should not avoid the games for any reason other than active hostilities between us and the host nation.

If any individual or group of athletes wants to back out due to a personal reason, he should be allowed to do so.

The games were intended to bring people together to participate in, and enjoy, a common interest .... athletics. They were never intended to make political statements.

I believe that, if I were an athlete, I'd feel safer in China (except for the crowds and pollution) than in most of the wishy-washy nicey-nicey countries because most folks, including the bad guys, are fully aware of the fact that China is not a good place do something that runs contrary to the desires of the state.

Boycott of Olympics?

It has always been my thought that the Olympics should transcend politics and we should put our political differences behind us for this event. I thought it was wrong when Carter boycotted the games back in 1980 and I am not in favor of it now.

Many of these athletes have worked their whole lives for this moment. I do not believe we should rob them of this chance.

Chinese Olympics

Terrorism is the least of their worries. The air is so polluted in China that many athletes are considering simply not attending because the level of exertion they must compete at would compromise their health by breathing the bad air.

There's much history and culture in China. But, some of that recent history is being swept under the rug. If the US boycotts, it could backfire on us. It wouldn't hurt China, but what would we do if they called in all their loans??

The time to deal with things political is outside of the Olympics. Treat it simply for what it is -- the games. Deal with other things, properly, outside of them.

Boycott the Games!

I do feel we should not go to the Beijing Olympics, but then, I have never been in favor of our close trade ties with China, either.
It might not hurt China physically for us not to go, but if enough countries protest against Beijing's high-handed treatment of their citizens--including ethnic Tibetans, Christians, and dissident writers--perhaps they might realize that if they want to be on the world stage, it means at least trying to behave well, if for no other reason than that it is no longer possible to keep things secret within one's borders.
Yes, our athletes worked hard...but I have read at least one account of an athlete who has misgivings about going to the Beijing Games because of the danger. Do we really want an incident similar to Munich in 1972?

China

If the Americans boycott the games, China wouldn't suffer. They would prefer that Americans don't attend, since the Chinese would win more medals, if Americans boycott.

olympics

Isn't it funny that there was so many problems about the France that many were relieved when China got the olympics, and now this!

I think rather than pick on who is hosting the olympics the world should step up and do something about the politics and kick-backs done to both get the games in their country and to have certain athletes win. We need to go back to the original idea of the Olympics.

Hard choice to make but I say go to Chinna the athletes have worked hard for this their entire lives. Lets not let innocent people be punished for the actions of others.
