breaking into your own home

When I was in college, I walked out the apartment door with my keys still hanging on the wall just inside the door (between the window next to the door and the door itself). It was the first day of my new internship that was 40 miles away, and my roommate wasn't home.

Rationally, I should have just cut the screen, reached in and grabbed the keys. But my first thought was to try and kick the door open.

So at 6:30 in the morning, I started kiciking at the door the same way you see it done in the movies. Oddly, my door did not just pop open like you always see it. All the kicking did was split the frame around the door and stay locked tight. In the end, I had to cut the screen like I should have done in the first place.

Not only did I have to pay to get the screen repaired but I also had to find a way to fix the door frame. But I wasn't late, and that internship eventually lead to a full-time job.

I can't believe I had to do this...

I am so paranoid about having my keys on hand because once I locked myself out of my house and had to break in through a side window. The window faced a busy street...it's a wonder that someone didn't call the cops on me!!! lolol...One of my most embarrassing moments...

Have you ever had to break into your own house?

A more interesting question might be, "Have you ever had your house broken into?"

Hmm....

Obviously, I'm not the only one to have automatically locked the doorknob while the keys were still inside....
