Restaurant Wait Time

Like another post, I wasn't sure whether the question meant the time waited before being seated or if it meant the time to receive an order after placing it.

Waiting to be seated depends on the time I have available. If I need to be at an appointment, for instance, I will find another place instead of waiting to be seated.

In the past have been told that I have the patience of Job, but in my old age, I agree that beverage orders need to be placed within a few minutes and food orders placed shortly afterward.

Waiting...

I wasn't certain if the question was regarding the time you'd wait to be seated, or the time between ordering and having food brought, so I voted based on the latter.

Generally, the time I'll wait to be seated depends on the quality/reputation of the place. However, once I'm seated, there's a few things I expect from a decent place.

Someone should come to take at least a drink order within 5 minutes. By the time the drinks come, they should offer to take the order for the meal.

The first course (usually soup or salad) should not take more than 10 minutes after that. Other appetizers I expect to wait longer.

The main course should either come soon after finishing the first course or appetizers, or at least an update if there's a delay. It should not come before I'm finished for two reasons. First, I don't like to feel rushed, and second, I don't like the table crowded with extra plates.

After that, someone should check back after no more than five minutes to make certain everything is okay. They should also check back just before the meal is complete to ask about additional drinks, dessert or the bill. If I want to relax a bit after dinner, the first two options must be available. If not, I shouldn't have to wait for the bill.

My biggest pet peeve is when they just take your drink glass to refill it. Either bring an additional glass or pitcher to the table, or ask before taking it. I nearly choked at a restaurant once because they swiped my half-full glass just as I needed it.

Patience!

I don't worry too much about time. If I am at a restaurant, it's because I have the rest of the day/evening off, and as long as the folks are nice to me, I can wait a very long time. I always try to carry a book with me, just in case the place is swamped.

Getting Tired of Waiting

Communication is key. If they're having a big rush, tell me. Keep my bread coming, and try to time the soup and/or salad so that it's not either too early or too late in comparison to the meal. Keep my drinks coming, and mix 'em good.

If it still is late, buy me one, or knock off a bunch from the check. Otherwise, I will leave, and likely won't be back. It would have to be one heck of a meal expected to make it worth being there over 30 minutes between being seated and my first bite of my entree.

How long would I wait?

I would wait a reasonable amount of time in a nice restaurant; assuming I have been served my salad or appetizer prior to the meal. I see no reason why those items shouldn't be brought out within 10 to 15 minutes of ordering. In fact, there's nothing I hate more than having my meal brought out while I'm still eating my salad. If I'm paying big bucks for a meal, I don't want to feel rushed.

restaurant wait time

My rule for waiting is that I must know that its a really great place. Waiting for most restaurants just isn't worth it. I learned this after waiting to eat at a supposedly famous restaurant and being terribly disappointed at its lack of anything distinctive.
