Blood donating
I cannot donate blood--as a teenage, I lived on Okinawa. While there I
contracted both infectious Hepatitis and infectious Mononucleosis (sp?)
at the same time. If a person has had either of these diseases, they are
not allowed to donate. I once expressed concern to my doctor that I
wondered if either of these diseases had damaged my liver. He did some
blood tests and reported to me that there was no sign of ever having
either of these diseases. Even though I explained that to the Red Cross,
they wouldn't take any chances--I was still not allowed to donate blood.

Blood Donations
I also used to give blood and pheresis. I would love to give again as I
have O neg. However, about 15 years ago I was going to give pheresis
and there was a bad system and the blood was clotting in the lines and
they did not even give me back any of my blood due to the clotting.
Because they also tested the blood, I was told that I could no longer
give blood because it came back with a false positive for TB. Even with
the information about the bad system, I cannot give blood anymore. I
had given over 6 gallons. I applaud everyone who does give. THANK
YOU!!

no age limit
I'm puzzled by the statement about not giving because of being a senior
citizen. There is no upper age limit, only a minimum age requirement.
Though it's possible that due to some chronic conditions that tend to
crop up with advanced age, there are medications that would preclude the
person.

Blood donor
I had hepatitus when I was 20 so my blood will not be accepted. I think
I got hepatitus from a blood test performed at a US public health
center. That was when needles were re-used.

blood donation
I will be giving next Tuesday. I believe I have been blessed to
have given 4 gallon so far. Its my 2 lb weight loss program.
Actually, I go because of the cookies.:-) A thank you also to those
of you who donate their time in the kitchen for those of us who are able
to give.
There is more to a blood drive than giving blood.

O- but too often low iron
I, too, have the universal donor type of blood. As a female of
childbearing years, though, I often have low iron and get deferred as a
result. The Red Cross has a more sensitive test now and I'm not having
as much trouble with deferrals. I haven't been good about for quite some
time due to the frequent deferrals. I plan to be more regular again if I
can hold the deferrals at bay.

Blood Donation
Everytime I see the Blood Donation Bus arrive here, I donate.
I have the universal blood type and feel it would be just wrong of me
not to give when I could help so many.

Blood donations
I used to be a regular blood donor; in fact, I was a pheresis donor
which is where they remove the blood, extract the platelets and put the
blood back in. It's kind of a lengthy procedure and usually takes up to
two hours. I started doing this after a dear friend died of cancer but
was kept alive for some years by pheresis donations.
I am no longer able to give blood as I have become anemic in my old age
and my blood isn't usable for donations. I was an eight gallon donor
prior to stopping donating.

Donate Blood
I have never given but not for not wanting to. I have received many
units but because of multiple medications can't give. Knowing how it
saves it gnaws at me that I can't.
