Favorite flower

I used to bring my mother a big bouquet of daffodils as soon as I saw them in the Spring. When she died at the very early age of 46, I was at a loss with no one to give daffodils to, so I started giving them to my aunt, her sister and kept up that tradition for many years. I also sent my mom flowers on my birthday. My first birthday after she was gone was a really sad day for me.

Gladiola

When I was young (3-5), my grandfather always referred to me as Grandpa's Gladiola Queen. I loved to walk around with handfuls of the long stems of gladiolas. Still to this day, they are my favorites! Even had them in my wedding bouquet.

My grandfather always had Gladiolas on his farm, along with the vegetables. In the summer, we would help him set produce out at the road, and we always had a bucket with the flowers available as well.

My mom likes them a lot, but she also claims they go with her name: Gladene.

I grew up on a farm that had a variety of bearded iris around the yard. Only later did I come to find that there were huge farms in the area that grew the bulbs. They're not only blue, but white, yellow, black, and every other color and combination imaginable! Some are so very delicate, while others are bold! Some have scent that just barely hints at its pedigree, while others require an open window.

They were my dad's favorite, too. I still pick up a couple dozen blooms from a farm on Memorial Day weekend to decorate his grave, and those of others.

Favorite Cut Flower

I am a big fan of the lovely Purple Iris. They are so cheerful and last a long time.
