When my boys were small, we lived about four blocks from an applicance store and every few weeks, they would drag home a large box that they played with in the front yard until the rain ruined it. They had more fun with those boxes.

My sons are 50 now but whenever hubby and I see a large box setting out on someone's curb waiting for trash collection, we are apt to say, Should we take that home for Steve and Brian? Ah, such happy memories, even though the neighbors didn't think it improved our landscaping.

Our neighbor worked for an appliance store. About once every other month during the summer he'd provide us with an empty refrigerator box. For about a week, we'd have a new fun house, or castle, or fort, or whatever our interest was at the time.

I also liked building toys. I had a set of TOGL blocks, which were like a plastic Erector set. The cubes had a hinged side, so you could make flexible/moving structures.

We also had a nifty set of interlocking red plastic bricks, one or two squares in size, about 1/2" thick and 1x2" for the two squares. There were white door and window inserts that let you build a rather nice red-brick house. There were also half-triangle pieces for making sloping roofs. We'd usually use a stack of 1x1" pieces to make a nice chimney.

An old car out in the grove.

That car was a spaceship, a racecar, a submarine, a speedboat, a luner module, a tank, and a place to hide really cool, important stuff, like rocks and broken tools found in the junk pile.

I loved (and still do) any toy that you can build with...Tinker Toys, Legos, Lincoln Logs, and those Playskool wood pieces that you could stack up any which way!

The originator of this poll must be younger than some of us because these were toys my kids played with. My favorites would have been dolls (and we named them ourselves; they didn't have names when we got them) paperdolls and the best yet -- books.

It's a toss-up....books and paperdolls. I am in my mid seventies, and I'm making sure my great granddaughter loves them both as much as I do

The ones listed weren't among my favorites
-- I was, and am, a bookworm.
