Apples don't seem to taste as good as they used to taste. I used to love McIntosh and Jonathan, but can't find that good taste in those varieties today. Now I like Pink Lady.

I also used to love crab apples...my mom had the BEST apples butter recipe that used crab apples. I have never had apple butter to meet her recipe. I wish I had the recipe and the kind of crab apples that were in our neighbor's yard in Minnesota. I am not sure of the variety, but I think they are dolga crabs.

I love the Ida Red. Good all purpose, and last a long time without losing flavor.

I like fresh Empire apples - Red Delicious are also good by themselves, but they can get a bit mealy if they're too ripe, and McIntosh are good with cheese, but they're just a bit too tart alone.

Granny Smith apples are perfect in pies and other baking.

Ida Red is my favorite for pies. One of our orchards started me on these one years and since then I have received more complements on my pies than ever before.
