In Religion this
week, we first learn how Jerusalem was rebuilt after the Babylonian
captivity(which lasted 70 years) and Jesus arrived about 500 years after that.
The people, by God’s power, were able to rebuild the city and also repented on
their sin. Repentance is really the main focus of our Bible lessons this week.
In our second story, we hear how God used John to get His people ready for the
coming of the Savior. As we get ready to celebrate Jesus’ birthday, God helps
us ready our hearts by repentance. He enables us to be ready “on the inside”
and not just on the outside.
Memory
Wednesday: The joy of the Lord is your strength.
Nehemiah 8:10
Friday: Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the
sin of the world. John 1:29
During the month of December, we will be having two
“servant” opportunities as we prepare “on the inside” for Christmas. We will
hold a bake sale for Rev. Carlos Winterle – a missionary in Kenya (please see
the important separate note) on December 8-12. On Thursday evening,
December 18, the K-3 grades will lead the school’s Christmas worship
“Celebrate the Gift of Jesus”.
In spelling this week, we will learn two spellings for the
long /a/ sound: a_e and _ay. Words to be tested this Friday are: made,
came, gave, late, day, say, may, make. There will also be a bonus word for
each of these spellings.
Here is an interesting site for using geoboards with your
child on the computer. You can make a figure and have your child match that
figure. Or he/she can just experiment with it. It is also great for showing
symmetry, flipping shapes, turning shapes, same size, same shape – all of which
we have been studying. The site is found at:

It might be easier for you to go to the school site and click on this address
from the first grade page – look for the class newsletter. If you aren’t a
regular school site user, you might want to check it out at:

In reading this week we work with the short /e/ sound and
learn about blends (dr, fr, tr, br, bl, cl, pl, fl, gl). Watch for these blends
as they show up in the reading stories and on the worksheets. High Frequency
words for this week are: for, some, good, too, want.
