Parish Nurse Ministry at Lutheran Church of the Atonement
Reaching out into the Community to Care for God's Family in Body, Mind and Spirit
Welcome! You may browse public areas of our site.
The Parish Nurse Ministry is one of Atonement's ministries that serves the local community as well as our own congregation. We provide health education, consultations and referrals as well as a variety of support activities aimed at promoting wellness and ministering to the whole person: body, mind and spirit.
Praise the Lord, my soul, and do not forget how kind He is,
He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases,
He keeps me from the grave and blesses me with love and mercy,
He fills my life with good things, so that I stay young and strong like an eagle.
Psalm 103: 2-5

8/30/2008 - Walk to Bethlehem
In conjunction with the World Hunger Program, on September 28, 2008 we will begin a special walking/exercise program in which individuals choose their own exercise forms and times and families report their progress either at the church or online at the "Mileage log-in" link on this site. Group progress (converted to mileage equivalency) will be tabulated weekly, enabling us to "march" from Florissant to the holy city of Bethlehem, while enjoying trivia questions about the cities through which we are traveling. In addition, weekly devotionals will help us prepare to welcome the baby Jesus at our destination. Watch our group progress as it is tracked on a world map located in the narthex. For more about the program, go to the September Newsletter by clicking on its link on this page.
8/18/2008 - Chronic Disease Self-Management Program
This program is a workshop designed to help participants better cope with the symptoms they experience living with chronic conditions (such as heart disease, lung disease, arthritis, auto-immune disorders and many other illnesses). Additional descriptive information is available by clicking on the "Our Mission ... " link on this page. This six-week course will be offered on Wednesdays from 1-3:30 p.m. beginning September 17, 2008 in the chapel at DeSmet Retirement Facility, which is next door to our church. Apart from the (minimal-cost) textbook, the classes are FREE of charge, but class size is limited and pre-registration is required. Please contact Parish Nurses Kristen or Nicki for more information and to register at 837-1090, ext. 107.

4/2/2008 - Late Life Journey & Slow Medicine
In a radio interview geriatrician Dennis McCullough, M.D., outlines the stages for the latter phase of our lives, focusing on dealing with the eventual decline of our loved ones' health. He recommends an approach termed "Slow Medicine," which advocates anticipating and attending to an elder's changing needs rather than waiting for a crisis to develop. He suggests that we need to learn that time and kindness are sometimes more humane at these late stages than state-of-the-art medical interventions. His book is entitled "My Mother, Your Mother."
11/17/2007 - HINTS Grant
We recently received a HINTS (Health Interventions in Non-Traditional Settings) grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health. This funding will help provide monies for a variety of activities including the arthritis exercise program, walking program and Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (for information on these programs, click the "Our Mission ... " link below). It will also enable purchase of new equipment and supplies as well as replacement of some outdated equipment.

Thanks be to God for this special blessing!

5/30/2007 - New Times: Office Hours & Arthritis Exercise
Starting June 11 Parish Nurse office hours on Mondays will shift to 10 a.m. - Noon. (Thursday hours will remain from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.). Also, beginning June 11, Arthritis Exersise days will move to Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (9 a.m. - 10 a.m.).
4/28/2007 - Measure Your Risk of Breast Cancer
Scientists at the National Cancer Institute have developed an online calculator that helps women, age 35 and over, estimate their individual risk of getting breast cancer. The calculator accounts for only the most important factors and thus requires answers to only a short list of questions including age, race, reproduction history and family history of the disease. Click here for more details and a link to the online calculator.
3/10/2007 - Measure Your Risk for Lung Cancer
An online tool has become available for assessing the risk of developing lung cancer for long-term smokers and former smokers between the ages of 50 and 75. For those still smoking, the tool provides an estimate of the risk reduction achievable from stopping. Former smokers should focus on reducing risk from Coronary Artery Disease because they're more likely to die from heart disease than lung cancer. Our parish nurses have a 10-year heart attack risk assessment tool that requires knowing only a few of your test results, such as total cholesterol and HDL. Just call our office and make an appointment for a consultation.
2/07/2007 - Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program
Think you can't exercise because of arthritic pain or decreased endurance? Did you know that exercise could help decrease your arthritic stiffness and pains and may help increase your endurance? This FREE class meets here at Atonement on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9-10 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. Call parish nurse Kristen Thompson at 314-837-1090 ext. 107 for more information.
01/12/2007 - Importance of Saying "No"
In a recent interview the author of the new book entitled, "No: Why Kids -- of All Ages -- Need to Hear It and Ways Parents Can Say It." The author contends that we now live in a "Yes" culture that gives kids the message that they should have whatever they want and that this leads to disappointment and failure rather than perseverance, patience and commitment. The book provides sensible, age-appropriate advice on how to say "no" and get on track to raise self-disciplined well-adjusted adults. Here's a link to the 50 minute interview/discussion that also includes a link to the book.
12/07/2006 - Rules for Internet Safety
More and more, disreputable opportunists are engaging in activities much worse than those annoying emails. Now identity thieves are becoming proficient in stealing passwords, account numbers and more. To learn six simple rules for online safety, read the Wall Street Journal's Nov. 14, 2006 Mossberg Report entitled: Safety Dance.
10/20/2006 - "Dippy Dinosaur" Bathtub Thermometer
Each year approximately 3,800 injuries and 34 deaths occur in the home due to scalding from excessively hot water! The majority of these accidents involve the elderly or children under five.
The Plumbing Industry Council offers a FREE bathtub thermometer to anyone who calls to request one at 314-770-0093.
10/05/2006 - On-Air Discussion of Parish Nursing
To listen to a recently broadcast discussion (which aired on KWMU 90.7 FM) about the role parish nursing can play in providing and improving healthcare in the St. Louis region and worldwide, click on the following link: October 3,2006 St. Louis on the Air Show.
12/2/2005 - New Parish Nurse: Kristen Thompson
The Health Cabinet is pleased to announce the appointment of Kristen Thompson, R.N., to fill the post recently vacated by nurse Elaine Skarstad. Kristen joins Nicki Reynolds, R.N., in advancing the health care and education ministry at Atonement. We also thank Elaine for her years of service, including creation of our diabetic support groups.
12/31/2004 - Teaching Values to Teens
High school football coach and former NFL star, Joe Ehrmann, is building character while he teaches boys athletic skills. He is debunking the three false goals that have come to measure manhood in our culture and teaching boys how to become men of substance by focusing on relationships and a cause beyond themselves. (The principles are applicable to girls as well.) His story was featured on the cover of the August 29, 2004 Parade magazine and you can hear an interview with him and the Pultzer Prize-winning author of their book, "Season of Life," on an archived audio version of the December 16,2004 Diane Rehm Show. .
9/30/2003 - Walking Program
Our free walking/stretching exercise program is currently meeting three mornings and two evenings per week . For details click on the "Our Mission, Us and Our Services" link and scroll down close to the bottom.
6/10/2002 - "Jesus Loves Me" for seniors
To see a senior version of the popular hymn "Jesus Loves Me," go to the "Our Mission, ..." section of this website.
5/29/2002 - Losing Weight Could Save Your Life
According to an editorial in the May 25th edition of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, poor diet and lack of exercise kill more Americans in 2 years than AIDS has killed in the last 20 years! The article states that 35% are overweight and an additional 26% are classified as obese. No wonder diabetes rates have increased by 33% over the last decade.

Obesity among adults has doubled since 1980, while overweight among adolescents has tripled! In 1999, an estimated 61% of U.S. adults were overweight, along with 13% of children and adolescents. For more information go to Office of the Surgeon General and type in "overweight" or "obesity" in the search box or just click on Surgeon General's Call to Action.

A panel of experts discussed "Childhood Obesity" Thursday 2/28/02 on the Diane Rehm radio show at 10 am on KWMU at 90.7 FM. You can listen to an archive of the broadcast by clicking on Diane Rehm show archives and choosing the appropriate link under February 28.

Does America need to change the way its dying are treated?
Most people say they prefer to die at home, but today the majority of people still die in hospitals. Channel 9 aired a Bill Moyers TV series, On Our Own Terms: Moyers on Dying, that depicted how our system of caring for the terminally ill needs to be reformed. A St. Louis organization, the Gateway End-of-Life Coalition, has been formed in response to this program. They can be reached at 314-729-4401 for further information.
