Completed House in Biloxi
15 Lutherans Build in Biloxi
Mary & I just returned from another week (April 7-12) in Biloxi MS working on Habitat ThriventBuilds houses there. It was a wonderful week, but still lots of work needs to be done as you might imagine. In the past couple months, we had organized a team of 15 from our church, Good Shepherd Lutheran, here in Mount Holly, NC. We all had a memorable experience. It was fun to be back there. I had requested and was granted that Phil Tritz (YELLOW's supervisor back in October) would be our team's Construction Supervisor. Phil's sidekick, Austin, also worked with us during the week there. So, working with the two of them made it even more special for me. Our church team was assigned to a "cul de sac" in an existing neighborhood in the St. Martin area (eastern Biloxi). There are seven Habitat houses there in various phases of completion. We did trim work, grading/landscaping, sodding, painting, installed major appliances and bathroom fixtures and we did final cleaning. We spread 22 pallets of grass sod stacked 3-ft high (oh, that was fun - you haven't lived til you've moved that much sod!!). When we finished Friday afternoon, 2 of the houses were completely ready for final inspection, 4 only lacked carpet installation and final cleanup and the last one needed carpet, wooodwork and cabinet installation and landscaping/sodding. Those 7 houses had been built on concrete slabs and had been designed to fit in with the rest of the neighborhood houses. (If that is a new feature of Habitat, I wholeheartedly support it). We accomplished much in 4 days.

While there, Mary & I took the opportunity to take a look at the two houses for which the YELLOW team had built floor units back in last October (you were there!). I took some photos to send so that you could see the progress on the two houses (the first on Bowen St. and the second on Holly St.). Although both are essentially complete, Phil told me that neither have been moved into yet because of some problems with sewer taps, concrete quality, and other things not related to the YELLOW team's efforts. It was good seeing what we had started several months ago. Enjoy!

PROGRESS IN APRIL
There has been no lack of helping hands on the Gulf Coast this spring. Eight teams, consisting of eighty-six volunteers, have participated in the Thrivent Builds Worldwide Gulf Coast Community program. These volunteers have laid sod, framed walls, raised walls, built sheds, painted, installed doors and windows and more
Currently, Thrivent Builds Worldwide Gulf Coast Community houses are being built in Ocean Springs and Pascagoula. One team, here in April, helped landscape yards and performed completion tasks on the interiors of the five houses in Ocean Springs on Rosemont Street. Two other teams raised wall frames on the Thrivent Builds Worldwide Gulf Coast Community homes located on Polk Avenue in Pascagoula. In order to comply with FEMA's flood regulations and compensate for the low elevation of the lots in Pascagoula, the floor systems needed to be raised four to eight-feet above existing grade. Lifting wall frames from ground level onto these eight-foot high floor systems was quite a demanding task, but this group of volunteers did a fantastic job.

The Thrivent Builds Executive Steering Committee, made up of executive managers of both Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Habitat for Humanity, International, also spent several days participating in the Thrivent Builds Worldwide Gulf Coast Community. They stayed at Yankie Stadium with other Thrivent Builds volunteers and worked on the homes on Rosemont Street and Polk Avenue.
