8/22/05 Happy Birthday Baby Man Will! |

Today is my youngest's 17th birthday. It goes too fast. Why am I standing here looking at an almost grown man who is Mama's baby? It is bittersweet for me.I did *zero* knitting, crocheting or sewing over the weekend. I did block out the sleeve but will be frogging that and starting over. There are two rows that I don't like and would hate while wearing. What I did accomplish - I washed my car while DH & DS changed the oil, I made DS a German Chocolate Cake - from scratch, cleaned out the big freezer and cleaned/lined the master bathroom drawers. I have a nice size bag of things heading out of the house. What DD and DSeester don't want will go to Freecycle. I love Freecycle - even better than my garage saling although I don't get the thrill of digging for bargains. Saturday DD, DGB & I hit the circus. It was so fun - not just the circus itself but watching the expressions on DGB's face was priceless. He ended up with a light-up sword, an elephant cup that held a snowcone and a hat that came with the cotton candy. The magic number there was *8*. Everything had the price of $8 except for the sword and that was $16. Who cares? He wanted it and he's worth it. I did land the bestest parking spot there. I pulled around the corner to go in front of the building and traffic made me halt. I saw a parking log to my right and two guards standing at the entrance booth. With traffic halted, I was able to read the sign - UT parking only. Yehaw! I whipped in there with my tag and found me a handicapped spot - who could ask for more? I couldn't believe my luck. I'm exhausted from the weekend. I not only did all of the above but I cooked dinner all three evenings, cleaned the house - including a thorough dusting of my bedroom, completed the laundry and ran for a load of groceries. I was soooo tired last night and DH jumped in and cleaned the kitchen. What a guy! Words to the Wise: Most misfortunes are the results of misused time. | Plugging away at the Eyelet Pullover sleeve. I have 4 more rows for sleeve #1. I may end up pulling it out and starting over and then again, I may block to see how it goes. There are two rows that I don't like and haven't a clue why they look like they do. I've noticed the same "look" on others knitting and thought it was from getting your stitches twisted when frogging. That didn't happen during the construction so not sure why I have these two funky looking rows. Last night DH and I hit the new Whole Foods for date night prior to heading to DS's football scrimmage. I love, love, love going there!!! We had such fun taste testing, touching, looking, reading, sniffing and buying. We only spent $30 so we did ok. We've decided we need to take DNeighbor Mike on a field trip. He would love that store. We're eating beef stew with him tonight. He's such a great neighbor. What are these pics, you ask? The 4 bags are what I made to house the 3 scarves and the shawl. I love these little bags made from scrap lace. The other pic shows the blanket I made for DN J. Maybe it'll keep his little, bony butt warm this winter. Something to roll around and enjoy. Love from his aunt. I have my list going for the things I want to knock out over the weekend. Wish me luck. DD & I are taking GB to the circus Saturday morning. Words to the Wise: There is nothing so fatal to character as half finished tasks. David Lloyd George |

| Here are the three blankets heading to the Linus Project. I finished up the Raggedy Ann/Andy and while I was working on it, it dawned on me that I had two more blankets looking for a good home. Linus Project immediately followed the thought - the blankets go to children who are victims of violence. A kid in need is where these belong. I will drop them off once GB wakes up from his nap.
I am about 3/4 finished with sleeve #1. Still unsure about the look - we'll see. Not much knitting going on. I sewed a blanket for DN J who spent the last two days with me. I will show a pic of that later this week. Been cleaning although I've been wanting to make kitchen curtains and shower ring covers. I don't think the boys will behave long enough for me to do those two projects. So, that will wait. I cleaned all the books off my shelf in the office and moved them into the living room. I cleaned off the living room bookshelves and a whole load is being freecycled. Clear out what you don't love. There were a lot of books that I was wanting to get to but that is not priority to me. All it was becoming was my albatross. I do that enough let alone letting books do it to me. Now the reading level is more manageable and I may actually feel like grabbing them off the shelf. Plus, the goal is to get to the point of reading what is currently coming out and not something printed in the 80s or 90s. Time to come to grip with what year we're in. Finished cleaning the 2nd shelf in the main bathroom. It feels good to purge and clean. Just moving the shampoo bottles to the front really makes a difference in my mind. Why would you put something you regulary use in the back where it is hard to reach? The reasoning is beyond me. Am I ready to go back to work? Uh, not really but it'll be okay. I have more time off coming in October when DB comes to visit plus there is always Labor Day. |

8/16/05 First Day of the Last Year, Son |

Today is my youngest's first day of his senior year. How sad does that make me? My life has zoomed by - I can relate to the Zoom, Zoom, Zoom commercial.Speaking of zoom - finished another scarf. I really like this one - the pattern is so pretty. I blocked it out longer since I only had two skeins and it just barely crossed over once you got it around your neck. I also made a lace bag for each of the scarves. I'll show you a picture later this week. I cast on for the Lace Sweater from the new Vogue Knitting magazine. Now I'm not sure that the color/yarn is right for it so we'll see. I have about 1/3 of one sleeve completed. I'm glad I started out with the sleeve because I don't think the size I picked is correct. Who has an arm smaller than 11" in diameter? And still eats on a regular basis? And is over 20 years old? I lined the kids bathroom cabinets with a few pieces of the fabric samples. I also unloaded a bunch of crap out of there. I never go in there and clean cupboards - it patiently waited for me though. I also lined my side of the cupboard in the master bath. That also got a cleaning out. It really looks nice now. I need to line the 3 drawers in the master and 2 more shelves in the kids'. I have no Words to the Wise until Thursday. I'm home with DGBaby this week. We're spending some time together before he goes back to school on Thursday. We hit the library yesterday which, he loves. I'm half way through The Shop on Blossom Street - easy read, not necessarily intriguing. This is how easy the read - I started it at the dr. office at 3:30 and by the time I hit the sack at 10 - got halfway through. Oh, plus I cooked, cleaned up (kitchen, me and GB) and knit during that time. Yeah, that is pretty easy.

8/9/05 Heating Up... |

Right now I'm feeling overwhelmed - work is busy, my youngest's final year of high school is fixin' to start, football season for DSon starts on Saturday, and life has just plum been busy! Fatgirl started back to working out after a two week hiatus. I went to the weigh station to check progress on the gaining graph and uh, yep - 3 pounds up. I need to get off the feed bag and back onto the training circuit. Middle age is getting on my nerves - even if you're busy and extremely active, you still gain weight. Fat ain't keeping me from progress. Here is DD's credit card holder to match the purse I made her. I like how it turned out. I kindly wrote down the dimensions and then left them at home but I think it is 4" wide and 4.5" tall. Big time guess. Very quick project. I lined it with the same fabric that I line the purse. I love the button choice! I found this in my old button collection. Old button collection contains some buttons from Grandma thrown in with ones I've collected over the years from yard sales, etc. Yummy fun in that collection. Do you have those weeks where everything you're working on has a problem? The scarf? I forgot to do the cable row. The Wheeling Willy x-stitch/plastic canvas? I cut the plastic one hole short. The Penguin Christmas Tissue Box? ditto - cut one hole short. The Friday Harbor Sock? Tight enough to fit a 10 year old. A skinny one. Does anyone know if I can block these large enough to easily (or easier) pull over my heel and onto my foot. I can get this on my foot but it takes a whole team of fingers/hands to get there. It is frustrating when all this happens to the projects. It makes me wanna cast all of them aside. Luckily, I'm a good fudger and you'll never know where the mistake/problem occurred. You must move past your mistakes or you'd never get anything accomplished - sounds like a proverb or sumpin. Words to the Wise: Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom.

8/5/05 Moving through... |

Yep, I'm back on the Friday Harbor socks. I've attempted to knit these at least *3* times. I keep trying and then I find out about this group Knitting on the Road Knit-along which, tells me that I need to pick them up and try again. The group chose Friday Harbor as their Aug/Sept project. This pattern has given me trouble every single time - I hope to make it through this time. We shall see. I'm going to put beads on them since I also have a nice stash of beads. Like I need to start another project.I did *zero* knitting last night since it was date night. Instead, I overindulged at Luby's. I'd been dying for their Chicken 'n Dumplings but alas, they no longer serve them. They also don't use cloth napkins any longer. They've also lessened the portions and all your food goes on one plate. Not that Fatgirl needed more but was more of a surprise. I had their crawfish etoufee and attempted to lick the plate but DH stopped me. I loved everything I had. It was worth their jump in price, lack of cloth, smaller portions and having all my food on one plate. I guess their little bowls are becoming too expensive to replace. Reading: I picked up Les Miserables as I promised. I read about 6 pages before having to turn off the light and crash. Way tired and ready for the weekend. DSeester is coming over to make her famous fries and we're gonna grill burgers. It doesn't get much better than that. Words to the Wise: The hardest years in life are those between ten and seventy. 8/4/05 Thursday Gift |

Look what I got! When I got to CwS last night, this was wrapped and waiting for me. I was almost dancing around the store when I opened it. Exactly how would Jenny know that I don't have this book? It was wrapped in beautiful Japanese lantern paper and topped with a homemade card. I was thrilled beyond belief - I love Barbara Walker's books and I only own one - the one that shows you a million types of square that help you learn as you put together an afghan of squares. Her books are by no means cheap and I love reading knitting books. Thank you Jenny! How do you thank someone for a thank you gift? Jenny is the one for whom I made the crocheted top . Obviously I made it to CwS. For most of the evening I sat with Pat, the owner of the store. I enjoy sitting near her. I had to move to sit near her. The main reason I moved was it appeared I would be in the middle of all the loud/know-it-all/done-it-all women that I can tolerate in small doses. Uh, very small doses. Pat doesn't do that, she's secure in herself to not need to be the center of attention at all times. Pat finished off a hat while I worked away at the blue scarf. What? I haven't added it to the status bars? Oh jeez. I am up to the buttonholes on the credit card holder for DD - I think she already picked out buttons for it and I need to track those down. So - I started the blue scarf. It is turning out really pretty. I like it and it looks like the yarn likes it too. I've been listening to a book on tape. I'm trying to clear off the entertainment center in my office so that I can give it to DD. It holds my paperback books and since I don't have an overabundance of time - I figured I could finish these books and Freecycle them. The library has 6 of what I have in the office and I plan on writing down the hardbacks I have in the living room. My drive would allow for me to listen to a ton of books. I think this would make better use of time and it is not like I don't read every night anyway. I just finished The Da Vinci Code. Yeah, pretty hoaky like I'd predicted. My reading tastes are either still in school mode or way different than others'. I don't know which but I do know that anything receiving that much attention is probably mostly hype. I think it was worth reading, though. My problem may have been my having set it aside for our trip to Pennsylvania. It was really hard for me to get into it once we returned. Now I can move onto reading something else. Maybe I can pick up Les Miserables again - it is still waiting for my attention. 8/3/05 Birthday Month |

Isn't this a fun fabric? When cleaning up the office, I found it and decided I need to make something out of it. I have it lying around so that I don't forget to keep thinking about it. I'm thinking comfy skirt but I generally don't wear comfy skirts around the house. This is a flannel fabric. I don't know if I have enough for a pair of shorts and I don't think there will be a time where I would want a pair in flannel. If you have any good ideas, let me know. I think I have 1 yard. Can you tell that it features mixed drinks? It has a lot of cool ones on the fabric - only a few are shown in the pic.Guess what!? I found Kool Wool for 50% off at Hancock Fabrics. I saw their CLEARANCE SALE sign and had to get in there. I really shouldn't have - I have never been in a more dis-organized store that has the slowest employees in the world. Slower than the post office! I ain't kidding. When I got in there, there was several bins of 50% off yarn but the only thing that interested me was the Kool Wool since that is what I make slippers from. I found a cool azz book which, I will talk about and show when I take a pic. I found fabric for my kitchen curtains - 25% off. It took me about 45 minutes to finally move up to get my fabric cut. The first lady in line was making her weekly visiting trip and the store employee seemed to enjoy the little chitter chatter. The next person in line was a guy who couldn't decide whether or not to take all of the 8.75 yards on the bolt since he wanted 9 yards. I soooo was itching to slap him since he knew he was delaying me even more. I was bound and determined to make it through the line so I waited. After he finally made up his mind, she hand wrote the tag with slower than molasses hand writing and then she proceded to tie up the fabric roll with 3 pieces of string. Painfully slow. Nope, my blood was not boiling yet. It didn't start that process until I got to the cashier. I immediately asked (knowing it takes 2 days for them to do anything) if "this" book was on sale since it was in the basket next to the yarn marked 50 off. Uh, I don't know. Uh, any way you can find out? Uh, yeah, let me page the manager. Immediately after she pages him, she answers the phone and then pages him to answer the phone. What'd I tell you? Yeah, 2 days. After the 2 days and an answer from a different employee, I ended up with 25% off the book. At that point, I woulda paid $4,000 for my items just so I could escape. I felt like a prisoner in hell. I know that I will NEVER again go into the Hancock Fabrics located in south Austin. Those people need to realize that the show is not entertaining when you have a life and want to get back to it. I'm about 75% finished with the knitting on DD's CC holder that matches the Seed Stitch purse. I could finish it tonight if I wasn't headed to SnB. Last night, DH & I helped DSon make an enchilada casserole and banana pudding for 25 boys. The football team is having a pot luck today and DS is a good volunteer. I'm sure he'll be proud. After that we worked on his letter of application to the head coach at Texas A&M. After we get DFIL's and DS's coach's approval, it will ship out to the college. How exciting! It is hard to imagine being 16 years old and so focused. I don't know where my son gets it. Words to the Wise: "Life is a stocking," grandma says, "And yours has just begun.
