9/28/04 Tuesday |
My new shop:
Didn't work on anything last night although I had planned on doing so. DSIL & DMIL brought over DSIL's picnic table for us to store, then DD showed up and we all went down to the local frozen custard shop. Yeah, that is the reason for the shop shown above. But, I did go work out immediately after work - does it count? Sure does! Knitting Update: I have 7" of the foot completed on Tom's Hunting Socks. I need to try it on DH to make sure it is not saggy around the ankle. Enjoying the new Patternworks catalog. I love dreaming and pretend ordering. I did run by Hill Country Weavers yesterday at lunch to pick up the acorn hat pattern for DGB. I'll soon be digging through the stash to see what yarn I have for this project. 9/27/04 Monday - Back to Socks |

|
Knitting Update: Got the socks on a roll - I'm on the home stretch of the first one. I have finished the gusset decreases and now doing the plain knitting until heel to toe measures 10". This yarn and gauge works up extremely quickly. I love the Kool Wool - I may find some other type projects to use it for although it is fairly pricey for the size ball you get. I found the pattern for the knitted mink stole. It was in the left hand drawer of my desk in my home office. Since I hadn't worked on bills in a while and that is the stamp/return addy labels, etc.....I didn't know they were in there. They must've gotten stuck in there when I took pics for Mr. Blog. The yarn I'm considering is really thin so I'm going to swatch with similar yarn that I have in the stash to see if doubling it will work to give me the effects of the pattern. Yummy fun.I finished up the laundry - thought I'd never get that done and I wasn't in the mood for putting it all away - but I did it. When I left for Florida, I had the neighbor take care of Alexandra. She was obviously bothered that we were gone because when I got back home, she had thrown up her dry food. Well, Mom doesn't believe that cats belong outside so she let her in the first day they were there and I was at work. When I got home, I picked her up and put her outside and they noticed and said they'd leave her out. Well, I noticed that the throw rug by the back door had remnants of cat food throw up....someone kinda cleaned up. DH washed floors, I vacummed and then I washed sheets from all the beds + washed all the throw rugs. The house is tidy, bills are paid, everything is freshly washed....life is good at this point. DH is pouting because I'm not making the socks for him so I guess I'll have to pump out another pair of socks. I'm sure DS will expect a pair for himself, too. I'll have the house to myself next weekend. I need to start a list of what I want to accomplish. I've been wanting to watch the knitting machine video so I can start making things on it. I want to tackle the knitting machine this weekend. I'm thinking I could pump out quite a few blankets on it, get my stash down to manageable size and be able to buy kits for sweaters for myself. I just can't justify it with the amount of yarn/fabric/patterns that I have looking at me. Plus, there really isn't room for more. Words to the Wise: A liar needs a good memory. There's nothing so pathetic as a forgetful liar.

They're gone! GONE! Last night, DB Chad arrived to take them back to Florida. Lucky him - not only does he get the great side of a round trip to Texas and back, he can't even get away from them. Oh well, my floors are washed and vacuumed, laundy chugging away and I only have to update the checkbook and bills and finish a bag I'm sewing. Life is good after all. I don't have to suck on a bullet after all.See what I've finished? All three! The two on the floor are heading to San Antonio and PA. They'll soon be on the heads of two precious baby girls. I finished the third one while visiting with Mom & her hubby over at Seester's house. Seester is the best french fry cooker I've ever met. That is a weakness of DH so I may lose him to her after all. He was hatin' me telling the story of the fries - moaning and groaning about not being there to get some. Would he have went with Mom & Fred in order to get the fries? Yeah, they were that good. Well, I'm off to finish up this house. Just wanted to update the blog. Hope everyone enjoys their Sunday.

9/23/04 Thursday |
Home ~ safe, sound and finally rested. Florida Saga: We got home about 8:30 Tuesday night. We left Monday morning about 6:30 a.m. and got into Florida around 7 p.m. The bridge that is blown out on IH 10 affected us which I thought wouldn't. We had to exit into Pensacola and drive through bumper-to-bumper traffic for 2 hours. When we got into Alabama, we started seeing some of the damage - no billboards, huge trees blown over or snapped off. Being highway, we could only see tree damage. When we got into Pensacola, totally different story. Huge ass trees covering the road, power lines hanging down with the telephone poles leaning, snapped, etc. Loads of places still boarded up. No power anywhere. Anything that was running was doing so on generators. Very few lights working and those are on generators. Some places had the wires hanging where the lights used to hang. Luckily everyone was treating intersections as 4 way stops. DH said "look at our lights" and I laughed cuz the wires looked like streamers spun together with nothing hanging off them. When we got into the traffic headed back towards Milton, there were huge ass lines of people trying to get gas - I think to run the generators and fuel for cars to go get in line for water, ice and other lines. There are volunteers driving around handing out bottled water, ice and MREs which are those packaged meals that used to be called sea rations given out during the war. Weird shit. One of the bridges we had to cross to get into Milton, the road next to it is GONE. Gone! I couldn't believe it. The water, waves or something washed the entire road away. The water has to be boiled if you're going to drink it which means you better have a camp stove with fuel to run it. Can you imagine sitting at your house for 3-4 weeks - no hot water to bathe, no electricity, eating sea rations and standing in line every day for water, ice, gas or food? Gawd.
Anyway, got Mom with me. She was a trooper during the trip. She's been having back trouble since she tripped over a chair a few weeks ago. I guess it is something that will heal in time. A lot of the roads, especially in Louisiana, are extremely bumpy and throw you into the roof when you're driving - she ate a few pain pills for the trip over.
We finally found a hotel room at 3 in the morning ---- after driving from Florida, through Alabama and most of Mississippi. I failed to take into consideration all the people driving over there for the relief effort. Tons of people to help with the electricity hookups/repairs, delivering generators, insurance adjustors, etc....they have all the rooms taken even states away. Keep in mind - DH and I were on hour number 22 of no sleep plus having driven all that way. I would've paid anything to get a room. Luckily they had two rooms - we dropped dead and slept for 5 hours and then back up and on the road after getting some breakfast.
What a trip. My ears have been pounding since yesterday. I've never had an earache in my life but I've started getting drainage into my ears in the last year that makes it hard to hear and sounds like that boom-boom shit you hear in the car next to you. Very irritating.
Ain't he cute?

Knitting: I finished the 2nd Pumpkin Hat on the way down to Florida and did zero knitting on the way home. I would've done a little but I stuck my needles in the bag that DH put in the bed of the pickup. No big deal since I didn't think I could do it riding in the back seat - afraid of car sickness since I wouldn't be able to see all that good. I started the brim of the 3rd hat this a.m. - already have the pointy things made so onto the hat. It was so nice to see GB last night. What a breath of fresh air. Mom enjoyed laughing with him. 9/19/04 Sunday Evening Update |

|
Finished another book and finished the pink, beaded socks! I've also made a little progress on the 2nd pumpkin hat and have the bag loaded with the pattern/yarn for Tom's hunting socks (size 11 Liz). Heading to Florida in the morning. We have the generator, 15 gallons of gas and 3 cases of water loaded up and heading for the folks. We don't know what the circumstances are so we also loaded up 10 gallons of diesel in case we need enough to get outta dodge. The plans are to get out of here by 7, into Houston by 10:30 and into Florida by 7 or 8 tomorrow night. We want to load up the famn damily and head for a hotel in Alabama or something. At this point, we're only bringing back Mom and her DH although I'm sure it'll be a crowded enough truck with the four of us. The hardest part for me will be riding in the back seat - major case of claustrophobia which is extremely difficult for me to control. I'm just gonna have to try to be a woman about it and not make the world suffer with me. Yeah, what a trip. Never did get in touch with my boss so I sent him and Adam an e-mail - hope I have a job when I get back. What's a woman to do? Knit, I guess. Grabbed me the new Crochet magazine by Knitter's (is that right?) I figured I deserve something for the long trek to Florida. Not a trip that I'm looking forward to and even worse when we get them to the house - 3 to 4 weeks at my house? Send a bullet - only need one to end my misery. Started a new book - one by Nora Roberts. Already started off good - I love mindless reading. I was a baking fool today. Of course, having to leave it all behind. DH and I cooked chicken and dumplings. Way yummy. I baked a chocolate cake recipe by Emeril, a pumpkin pie and a pecan pie. Just my luck, I get industrious in the kitchen and then I have to hit the road. I probably shoulda peeked at the bills to see if anything is due but I'm too tired. Get over me. I am. What is up with my eBay sales of the knife rests? Something I'm missing? Grab something at a garage sale and you just never know. Maybe I'll be a millionaire by the time I get back home - you can hate me then, too.

9/16/04 Thursday, Date Night |
Started on the 2nd hat last night - Cousin Tracy was thrilled that I'm making a Pumpkin Hat for her baby's Pumpkin Head. In thinking about these hats, I remembered that I have a pattern somewhere for an acorn hat + remembered the Daffodil Hat on my new friend who lives in Canfield - oh memories of Canfield Fair! May the cock crow! Gail gave me the thumbs up to use the picture and include a link of her Daffodil Hat Gail's Site
I'm putting these on the WannaBes List for Catherine and Teagan and going to make the acorn hat for GB, if I find the pattern. I'll probably e-mail Tracy with a list of colors I have in the stash and see what she prefers....she may have an Aunt Char sweater in a color to match. I'm on the down swing of the pink, beaded socks. I'm doing the gusset decreases so I'll soon have these off the needles and on DD's hooves. The next work project will be Tom's Hunting socks so they'll be moving from the WannaBe List. Looking forward to Date Night and my 1-2 strawberry margarita(s) - every week I start getting the crave for them. Looks like Mom made it through the 2nd hurricane. They didn't come through unscathed - some property loss but they're safe and sound and they can still rest their weary heads tonight in their own home. I'm glad they hung out at the house - they did as I'd suggested, stay put. Words to the Wise: There is no sadder sight than a young pessimist. Mark Twain

9/15/04 Wednesday - Finished Objects! |

|
I accomplished two, count 'em, two finished items last night! I finished the book Bitterroot Landing and I finished a Pumpkin Hat. The book was good but just a basic abuse survival book. The Pumpkin Hat is a quick knit - very easy and great for an in-between project. I'll get to try it on GB's head tonight. After this, I have two more to make so the status bar will change again from 100% to wherever I'm at on the next one.Work is a lot better. We hired a new girl on Monday and I thought it'd be a while before I could turn over her duties to her but hey, I was wrong. She is being trained by Kay, too. Good thing cuz I hate training plus I don't think I'd be the best one to train since I was self-taught cuz no one jumped out there to help a girl out. Story of my life but I'm used to it. I need to get my vacation requests out there - needing some time away from this place. On my way to work I won "The Morning Wood" contest on the radio. They ask three people an option question and if they like your choice and reason why...you win. I won two tickets to Shawn of the Dead so I'll be picking those up today and see if one of my friends (if I even have one) wants them. 9/13/04 Monday |

|
I think my counter is going backwards....it was close to 5k and now it is closer to 4k....hmmm!Knitting Update: I have the Pumpkin Hat on the needles! I am looking forward to fall so I just had to start the hat on Sunday - the needles arrived in the mail on Saturday. GB is looking forward to his new hat and keeps asking me "where is my hat?" Hurry, hurry, hurry! Pink, Beaded Sock - I am row 6 of the last 11 row repeat of the cuff. Soon I'll be working on the heel and it is all down hill from there. Received a great goody in the mail when I got home Friday. DC Baby Ruthie sent me a set of her ornaments that she is creating for her craft sales booths. I love them and need to get a pic up here for all to enjoy. I think she did a splendid job on them. Reading: I am about halfway through Bitterroot Landing and it is pretty good. Cleaning off the book shelves ~ yeehaw. Pops' party went well - we had a nice turn out and everyone had way too much to drink. DH & I were tired enough to seem drunk - all that food prep and running around doing what needed done. We even had a fire in the burn pit - just for fun. I just got into bed and started dozing around midnight when the house alarm started going off. DSIL & her new beau were spending the night and I thought DS had set the alarm and someone had gone out a door. I couldn't get the alarm to shut off and when I finally got back into bed, DS came into our room and said that the alarm company was on the phone and needed the password in order to not send the firetrucks. I couldn't remember anything so DH had to wake up and talk like a blithering, sleeping idiot. After all that excitement, I still got the laundry finished yesterday - stripped three beds and washed that laundry too. Everyone ready for another joyous week?
