5/16/04 Oh No, they didn't...

....oh, but they did! Quite a few weird projects in this book - Knitting - by The Editors of Ladies' Home Journal Needle&Craft. I hit the G.Town book sale on Friday - had meant to hit it Thursday night but didn't realize that was the preview - thought it was Friday :-( I hit it Friday morning at 9 a.m. and snagged four craft books - the one mentioned above, The Family Knitting Book by James Norbury, Fabulous Fair Isle by John Allen, Celtic Needlepoint by Alice Starmore and Erica Wilson's Children's World. I think I will soon need more shelves to hold all my books.

Knitting Update: Started on the second leg of "Cream of the Crop." I had to write to the knitlist in hopes of some help (naw) because the CC (contrasting color) when flipped will not be correct. I can easily change the back to work and for the front I'm gonna hafta do 5 rows of MC (main color) and then the 2 CC in order to get it to look correct when flipped into cuffs. Bummer. Couldn't find an errata on the web.

Friday was my Spanish final from 7 - 10 p.m. I never thought I'd spend the entire three hours there but I did. I'm always the first one finished in any of my classes. At least it is over with - just have to continue to bite my nails for the results. So, what did I do all day on Saturday? Well, since the beer fridge took a shit...DH and I did a little g. saling and then we headed to the big box lumber yard/appliance store....and walked away with a $1566.30 refrigerator for the house. We bought the house fridge 10 years ago when we moved into the previous house. Right after the death of the beer fridge a few weeks ago...the handle on the fridge in the house broke. Not sure about you but to me, this was a sign. I figured, why pay $200 for someone's old fridge for us to use as a beer fridge when we really need a new one in the house. We got the coolest Amana fridge - stainless steel front, blacks sides with the freezer on the bottom. At age 40, I am tired of stooping over to see what is on the bottom shelf. Having the fridge part at the top - oh yeah. I'm in heaven. Not what I wanted for graduation - I was pretty upset that this will be my gift but when I woke up this morning, I was excited that we have it. What a lot of work though. We cleaned out the garage so that we could get the dead one out, then I had to unload the house fridge so the boys could move it into the garage after they moved the dead one. Then they had to move in the new one and I had to fill it up and clean the "new" garage fridge. I was draggin' ass but had enough in me to stay up to visit with Seester, Bird and Marc. I love sitting out by the fire - drinking and gabbing. Was a fun weekend for me. Now I have to clean the house over the week to have it ready for the party on Saturday. Anyone wanna help?

Sewing Update: This a.m. - Sewed the purple shorts for Will. Now just have to get him over here so I can elasticize them. When I went crazy at JoAnn's the other day buying buttons, I also picked up two rotary cutters. Maybe I'll try those out this evening and cut out some GB shorts.

5/14/04 What I'd Rather Be Working On...

than the Spanish final exam. Yikes! Please be sending good thoughts my way at 7 p.m. central time. I'll need lots of good thoughts headed my way to get the points I need to pass the test. Of course, my Internet connection is acting up AGAIN - I plan on shopping for something that actually works 100% of the time instead of 1% of the time. I get so d@mn frustrated when I am trying to look something up when I'm in the middle of studying - almost to the point of crying and then smashing the screen.

Started this last night. I did quite a few swatches trying to get gauge - started off with some purple in Red Heart but didn't like the feel nor the gauge. This is RH soft and is from the 3 leftover skeins from DD's afghan. I loved working with this yarn. The gauge appears to be working just fine - only have to get to 8.25" for the leg before I start the left leg and then put them together and work up the butt and back. I think it'll be cute and I plan on adding some crocheted flowers or something along with girly buttons. Easy garter stitch project even though it says intermediate. Maybe I'll hit that part. This is for my friend Jessica's baby. I plan on making a bib and maybe a blanket. We'll see what time allows. I have the graduation party next weekend so I'll be cleaning and prepping for that.

5/12/04 I wonder when....

...I became so disgruntled with stupid people!? Sometimes I just can't even respond when asked a stupid question. This morning, I asked one of the work study girls to go down to the dance studio and pick up the coffee urn she failed to pick up after the faculty retreat on Monday. I told her that when she gets back with it that it will need cleaned out. When she gets back she asked, "Now, what did you want me to do with it?" I respond, "It will need cleaned out before we put it up." She says, "But it is full of coffee! What do I do with the coffee?" Ok, let's regroup - the coffee sat since Monday...how about if you throw it out instead of what I was just thinking which involved a tube. Oh, it gets better. She comes back to me with the coffee grounds and says, "and what did you want done with these?" She has her nose scrinched up and she's just looking at me. Oh honey, would I like to respond to this one. Um, run down to McDonald's with them and see if they can use them. This is the same girl who I had clean up after the faculty retreat - save the food and put up the tables and chairs. We had salads. So, what does she do? She puts the salads in the fridge and throws away all the dressings. Cute. Not long after that, a guy in the office is showing me this website of a B&B that he visited. The website shows a picture of the grounds and he is taking his pen and pointing out to me where he was sitting, which direction his chair was facing, how many people were seated next to him....need I continue? I stand there with my eyes crossed looking at him. I know that I must learn patience but I'm really thinking counselling is in order for me. For lunch, I head over to Salvation Army and their having a 25 cent sweater sale. Yum. I nail 10 of them and had to get the one in the picture I show...if, for no other reason, to wonder why a place called Cape Isle Knitters would slap a Knitted By Hand label on a CROCHETED sweater? I think I'm losing my mind. I wonder if yoga would cure my impatience or if I'm gonna have to take out a few million dollar school loan and ship some people off to the school of common sense.

Anyway, I picked up the 10 sweaters for a total of $2.71 - with most of them being cotton for yarn and a few of them are wool for felting or ripping for slippers. One of them is an old wool sweater hand knit in Norway ----- very, very nice and in fabo condition...I'm sure it is worth a bit so not sure what I'll do with it yet.

Oh and this was after I spent $45 at JoAnn's store closing. Yikes! I bought two rotary cutters and a buttload of buttons. 50% off the buttons and 40% off the cutters. I had a load of candles too but I backed out on the poor old lady at the counter. Walked away with only the buttons and the cutters. Didn't realize they weren't taking checks - woulda bought it all if they were. Not sure what I'm gonna do with all these buttons but I hadta have 'em. Guess that is where my stupidity comes in.

5/11/04 This 'do looks like 'do 'do

What year would you guess that this picture was taken? Some time in the 70's? Yeah, I was surprised to see the 1986 copyright date. At least with the 60's they had the excuse of some really good drugs but in the late 80's? Sup with this? I found this pic in one of the 4 books I bought at a g. sale over the weekend - Stitch by Stitch. They have some neat ideas and patterns in them and I got them for a hell of a deal - 50 cents for all 4. K, sold! I also bought a bunch of sweaters with some of them being wool so I forsee a few felting projects on the horizon.

One week from Friday ---- Graduation! Yee-haw! Sure can't wait to do what I've dreamed of for years...walk across that stage. It has been a long jouney but I'm nearing the end. Then I get the added bonus of paying off the school loans.

Yesterday it dawned on me that Jessica's baby shower will be coming up soon so I need to get cracking on a blanket. Yikes - another UFO! I have 7 skeins of RH Baby Teri in my stash. It is a really light purple so I may end up dying it. I started the Cabled Eyelet Baby Blanket (link below) in hopes that this yarn will be appropriate for this pattern. The 2x2 ribbing doesn't seem to show so I'm not sure how the eyelets or the cables are going to do...we'll see.

Had a good weekend. DH, his sister Kay and her son, my friend Shannon and I hit the inbred Granger Lakefest. We had a nice time and they had a chance to drink all the beer they cared for. Shannon got sunburned and I was lucky enough to snag a little sun myself. I didn't buy any trinkets but we did look around and bought food. It was a fun time. We sat on the sidewalk, under the business awnings and people watched. Quite a few interesting, umm, people there.

Can't find my office keys. I hate this. I have a set that has a car key and the office keys - MIA. I hope they're in the backseat of hubby's truck. Last I remember, they were hanging on the hall tree. Yeah, like I can remember anything.

Cleaned my home office! I filed paid bills, cleaned out the roll around cabinet and moved the ribbon into the wicker drawer thing that I bought at a g. sale last weekend, put away books and mags, cleaned under the desk. I still have some work to do in there but it is already in much better condition. It'll also be much better once I get the yarn and fabric stash down to a more manageable size. I need to get Seester over there to take away some yarn. I wonder if she has a plan for what she wants to make so she'll know what she wants to take. In addition to making some more shorts for GB, I also want to make some of the cool ties for this summer. Guess my list would look like this:

1. Finish Sweater Afghan

2. Jessica's baby afghan

3. GB shorts

4. Cool ties

5. Sewing Repairs

6. Two tanks - one to bead and both to resize for skinnier me.

Speaking of g. sales....hubby bought a book for $1 and there is no telling what it is worth. "I am Frank Hamer" and when I researched on half.com...there is a reprint 1998 softcover for $180. Hubby's is the 1968 HC + signed by both authors. Yeah, glad we have the alarm on the house.

Sending Out Birthday Wishes to Baby Seester and Bro!
I had the most eye opening experience and no one to share it with. After taking the last test in Finished Class #3, I was walking back to work from my car and I see Melinda on my way out. She is a grad student who covers the front desk and owes me $...who I'd been cursing and thinking I'd never see the $. Well, she asks me if I can stop for a minute so she can write me a check. No, that is not the eye opener. Somehow we got on the subject of her having lost her mother 4 years ago. Unexpectedly. OMG - the well burst for me right there. I asked her how she dealt with it, is dealing with it, yada...yada. We stood there talking for over 20 minutes, mostly with tears streaming down my face. Love, understanding and compassion come from the most unexpected places. Recently I've been having a hard time dealing with my Mom issues. Since last weekend, I just want to melt into a puddle of tears over all that she's been through and continues to go through. I find a little comfort in the fact that she is still around but the person she has become is not the person that I miss. Although there were MANY things I could not share with her, there were so many others that I could. I miss the ear she was for me - it seems that I don't have that any more. Everyone else wants to tell me what they are doing, how they are feeling - it is all about them. Then there are times that I don't want to talk. Just sit with me, okay? Anyway, after our talk ----- I wanted to hand her back her check and give her one of my own. She allowed me to cry, she comforted me and most of all ------> she understood.

Well, I think I sailed through the test for my next to last advertising course. I thought that last time and with their subjective grading...I ended up with a 70 something. Boy, I was pissed. I've taken quite a few tests in my life and I can't imagine walking away from a test I think I aced, just to have them mark it in the 70s. Maybe he'll give the class a healthy curve and I'll do better than I think. Yeah, right. Either way, I know I passed the course so I am finished with that. Tomorrow is the test in advertising sales which I have an extremely high A - good thing since I want to go into sales. This was a breeze class for me. The prof has this horrible attitude but I can't help but like him. I have a chocolate chip on my shoulder too so let's band together.

Haven't touched a needle in a while. I think I'm going through withdrawal. End of semester tomorrow and then my Spanish final on the 14th - oughta be knitting, crodering, and sewing like a demon soon!

5/5/04 Cinco de Mayo
Worked on the sweater 'ghan last night - I have all the seams sewn down. Now, I only have to trim the threads and sew the edges. Almost an FO. Not real happy with how my sewing machine acted during the seam sewing. Seems the bobbin likes bunching up and leaving blobs everywhere. Grrrr

Speaking of the KnitList - how's come they let the talk continue on and on and on about the interchangeable needles? It is almost every day that someone else asks - Hey, whatda ya think of the interchangeable needles? Then, everyone who wrote yesterday, writes today about how great they are. Hello? Then there is the typical I'm taking a flight, can I take my needles on board + do you know of yarn shops in that area? Answer #1 - ask the airline, we don't work for them. Answer #2 - you're obviously on the Internet, look up shops for that area like the rest of us that don't clutter the list. Rant Off.

How come my family can't understand the concept of the upside down catsup bottle? I bought it so that it doesn't have to be shaken down to be squeezed. Every time I grab the bottle outta the fridge, I still have to since someone always puts it back in there with the lid up. I might as well go back to the other type bottle.

Another question, why do people write that they do this or do that ---- to pass the time? What time are you trying to pass? Time until you win the lottery, time until you die? What? I just don't understand that concept. Either I'm dense or they are. Maybe it is me.
