 GB Brendan Slipper Sock |
...it might last longer. Finished one of the 4 socks - here is the first of GB Brendan's. Still waiting to hear the size of DN J's foot to finish his first sock. Seester is trying to locate something to measure with - maybe she'll come up with something creative....1 1/2 remote controls?!
Was dragging around yesterday - I hate falling into slumps. There is so much I want to get done but really didn't have the appetite for much. It may be the weather - non-stop raining. We did hit the movies yesterday. Hubby and I went to see Lord of the Rings. Of course, I did take a couple of cat naps but the movie is something I want to own. The special effects with the big ogres beating the drum - instills fear in your heart. I never would've guessed this would be a series I would enjoy but I think I've been wrong a time or two.
Guess that's it - we just got power back on after a half hour or so -----> thought I'd get this on here before they decide to cut it off again. | | |

1/14/04 I guess.... |
a kick in the teeth is better than getting a pink slip!? Here at the ol' job - they're giving us a cost of living adjustment or a raise - can't member what they called it. From what I understand, it can range from 0% - 7%. I thought I'd be a shoe-in for at least 3% - uh, no. Sad but true - the way I figure the change, I'll bring home an "extra" $32/month. This is AFTER I get Excellent on all my review questions and AFTER being nominated for employee of the semester. Ok, I get it. Same as it ever was....good thing I've never counted on others to give me a reason to continue living. Really makes you wonder what others show on their paycheck...yeah, whatever. Keep it camel nose.
Have a 6 pm basketball game tonight for Baby Man - luckily it is in Georgetown so not far from home. I hope to finish the edging on DD's scarf while at the game. Last night, I got it to the length needed and started working on the edging while watching "Gangs of New York." DH and I saw this movie in the theatre (rare) and liked it enough to look forward to it showing up on the Starz channel. On the scarf, I wanted to put a dainty, shell edging but with the yarn itself - didn't come out dainty enough. I looked through my crochet dictionary and saw the mention of picot so decided that would be perfect for the look I wanted. Not really but some things aren't meant to be. I think it is turning out cute. I completed one edge and almost one side - I will have to press it to make it shape better than the floppy thing it is currently.
After the scarf, I want to do the house socks for GB - before the hat yarn gets here.
I am still scratching my head about the Knitlist - where everyone is debating the title of the book "Stitch 'N Bitch." When I first heard about the book, it raised my eyebrows a little and I knew a shit storm would be brewing. At first blush though, I thought of it as knitting and gabbing...not nagging, griping, etc. The ironic thing about the entire discussion - some say they don't like being tagged with titles of bitch or saying that is all they do - when here they are "bitching" about a book title. Uh, you just showed your true colors, honey - hide behind your Heidi and Mary Poppins books if you want cuz I still seeee you. To each his own - buy it, read it, burn it, eat it, make origami from the pages - cuz it is still on the bestseller list and you're still having panic attacks about a book title. Guess we don't frequent the same book stores - good thing cuz Pollyanna I ain't. I do agree, though, that I wouldn't give it to a 10 year old either - unless it were my own child. Just because I'm a little more liberal with my children - doesn't mean I'd impose that on other's children. I think I have taught my children to accept different ways, thoughts, words, people - to where a title of a book is not going to have my children walking around like unlearned idiots spouting bad language. It gives me the opportunity to educate them that it is unacceptable to talk that way.
Being an advertising major -> any publicity is good publicity, right? Just ask Michael Jackson. Ok - dead horse.
Here's how I came out on the Celebrity match:
Your best matches Scottie Pippen 99% (son would like this) Aaron Kwok 98% (boy, that's a Kwok of shit!) Sebastian Bach 97% (a dead man? is this payback for the times, at work, when I pretend I'm dead??) Matthew Settle 97% Wesley Snipes 96% (yummy)
You are water. You're not really organic; you're neither acidic nor basic, yet you're an acid and a base at the same time. You're strong willed and opinionated (who me?), but relaxed and ready to flow. So while you often seem worthless (huh?), without you, everything would just not work. (now we're talkin' - who got my raise?) People should definitely drink more of you every day. (let me show them where they can start ;-))

1/13/04 Puppen Show Time... |
We had the wonderful GB over last night - the mittens fit fairly well and he even performed a "Puppen Show" for Granddad and I. He laid under the coffee table and all we could see were the camo mittens peaking up at us. He's so entertaining. DD started college last night - we are the lucky recipients of GB.
Seester also stopped by on her way to work - she cleaned out her stack of shit I had piled up for her but she forgot her knitting :-( Oh well, guess it'll give us another reason to hook up.
Adam and I (cubemate) headed over to JoAnn Fabric at lunch. I know, I know - but they were having 70% off all remnants and I just had to take a peak. I only bought 8 remnants, 2 Snowmen at 75% off and 4 packages of 3 flat, gold, metal, heart buttons. I'm thinking of making some VD trivets with a button or two in the corners. I've been looking for flat, metal buttons to be on clearance and these poked their heads out at me and they were only $1 a card. I shoulda bought the last card - now I feel bad :-(
Speaking of feeling bad - I got the computer last night and checked on my checking account....only to realize that I only have $1550 in the account and my $1498 mortgage hasn't hit. Yikes. Instant sickness to my stomach. It sucks to only get paid "onced a munth" ---- and I never cut it this close cuz it makes me sick. So, knowing my student loan should be hitting my account...I logged into school info to find out the funds aren't released until the 14th. My stomach was so sick that I could barely knit. I messed up several times and had to frog.... gawd. Now what? ....I kept telling myself that it is not something I can change and I felt a little better. Well, this a.m., when I got to work...I logged in and there it was! The deposit for my loan. Yeehaw....off to JoAnn's. I worried for nothing but I didn't know it at the time. Not sure why they gave it to me early ~ maybe the big one was shining down on poor ol' me.
DD tried on the scarf and I lack about an inch or two. I hope to finish that tonight and add the crocheted, shell edging...and get it off the list. This, of course, will be worked on after working out. Fat girl has to get these pounds off.
Is that all there is to my life?

1/12/04 Great News!!! |
|
I am down to 7 classes to fulfill my degree requirements - Bachelor's of Science in Advertising with an Advanced Media Focus.....with 4 that I'm enrolled in already....meaning that I'd have to take 3 over the summer. Well, I really only need 7 hours after these 4 - which means two classes of 3 hours and a leftover 1 hour course. Well ---- the ol' tired brain was obviously working overtime cuz I thought "hmm, wonder if I can take a 1 hour independent study with Suzan Z from the dept I work? She just got back from a sabattical - she's the prof that I did an independent study with in the Spring '03 for The New Works Festival. I caught her in a co-worker's office and asked her if she could take me on and she said she'd do anything for her "crowning jewel of the NWF." Yeehaw. So, I called the UG advisor and she plugged me in. This works in more than 1 way ----1) cheaper since I'll only have to pay for a 1 hour course + no textbook, and 2) I'll only have 2 classes left for the summer. The Advanced Media courses helped me to drag it out and them's just the breaks. Can't believe I'm taking on 5 courses this semester - I did that last summer....yikes! Keep me in your sanity prayers cuz I'll need it.
The pink scarf is nearing completion. It now comes down past my boob so I only need another 6" or so. If it wasn't being made for my daughter it'd be done cuz I'd tie it real tight around the recipient's neck and it would reach their waist no problem. Yeah, evil woman. Get over me. Everyone else is.
I ordered the yarn for two hats for DH. He wanted brown at first and then decided black....so I bought both with 2 extra skeins in another color for some slippers, a bag or something. I had to buy $30 worth on the site so it worked out just fine. Yummy yarn. I have the hats on my list to do next, I have a slippers pattern for GB I want to work, and I also want to try a mosaic knitting afghan from one of the knitting mags. I guess I need to update my whiteboard in the office at home - so that I can stay on task.
Sold quite a few things online - eBay sales went fairly well and I sold almost all my books recently (textbooks and a few cookbooks I don't want/need). Plus, got the email that they've released my tuition funds so that'll help subtract the bills in the pile.
Already had two compliments on my handknit purse. Adam (other side of cube) tells me that I should market my skills. Uh, yeah - in my spare time I'll knit for money. Maybe at some point but I get a lot more satisfaction out of making things for DD, DSeester, GB, DS, DH, DN & N....every once in a while something falls out of the pile for me or the house. I enjoy the part about giving but I also enjoy it being on my time frame - not someone else's expectations. I'm hard enough on myself - don't need someone's else's deadline imposed on me.
Is that all I had to say? I hope so. | | | 1/11/04 Why... |
|
|

| ...oh why, must Killy crawl onto anything on the floor? Here I am, trying to pin the lining of the knitted purse - and she decides it is the purrfect place to park her butt. It amazes me. And...here is the finished purse! The lining turned out great - I made it from a blouse I found at Goodwill. It is nice and silky but not satin. The handle part didn't round well but I got a chance to use up some lacy bias tape by sewing it on top. I need to rethink the handle area if I make more purses with rounded handles.
Talked with DC Baby Ruthie last night - probably 2 hours worth. She was telling me it was 16 degrees during our talk. Yikes! She was also telling me about a rice bag she has that she nukes in the microwave and sticks under her shirt and sometimes takes to bed with her. I guess my DA Ruthie made Scott one since they're so well received and sell for $10 at the craft sale they sell at every year. She gave me the dimensions and I made two from stash fabric. Guess I need to buy more rice. Thought this was a great way to get rid of smallish pieces of stash - I made an inside bag which is sealed with the rice inside ---- then made a cover. I lined the open end of the cover with more of the lace bias tape...more stash put into use. Yeehaw.
Seester is doing fabulous with her knitting - Liz. I knew it wouldn't take much for her to get the hang of it since she has crocheting down pat. There is a lot you don't have to explain when someone has previously worked with yarn - how yarn can split and you have to get the entire loop, for example. She's off and running - see me beaming?
With all the sewing I've been doing - I find it a pain to have a pile of thread trimmings sitting on the side of the machine. So - decided to make a little basket where I can throw it into and dump every now and then. Its size makes it great to sit next to the machine and be out of the way. It's already in use.
I need to clean out my closet and find the pattern for DH's top hat. He's decide he wants me to felt the hat - since he likes the Booga J bag so well. When I originally found a felted hat pattern and emailed it to him - he told me "No, that is not what I'm looking for." I find that he's changed his mind - he was telling Deb & Deron about the hat. He's hilarious.
Well, I guess that is all for now. Keep warm if you're in the frigid parts of the world. The New England game amazed me with how cold it is in other parts of the planet. Brrrr..... |

1/10/04 One... |
 Boy Mittens |
...mittens set down and one to go. As you see in the pic, I used a set of mittens that I really like, as a protype. We'll have to see how these fit Brendan's hands - if they're way too big for him then these will be for DN J and I'll pare down the pattern for Brendan's hands. I think they turned out cute - especially since I didn't have a pattern to go from...plus using up the stash a little.
My haircut turned out fabulous. I really liked Hal - he knows what he's doing and it was well worth the $47 + $10 tip. After the haircut, DH and I headed over to Debbie's house for tamales, queso, chips and hot sauce. We played a game of spades - Deron and I enjoy spanking them. Poor DH - he always ends up with Debbie as his partner. Like he says, "There just isn't enough room up there for Debbie to learn something new. If you add anything new, something is going to fall out so she's real careful to not let that happen." I got a pair of flannel pj's and some cute earrings from Deb. She usually gets me some sexy nighties...which I promptly hang in the closet to collect dust. This time she bought something I will definitely use. I laughed my ass off when I opened the box - she constantly tells me to "take off the flannel and dress cute for DH." This year she decided to join me and bought herself a pair of flannels. Now we're talking! You don't even want to know what she gave DH - I'm the only one she could ever get away with something like this. Too funny.
Got up and headed out to garage sales - DH found his friend, JR, an electric dryer for $45. He's over at his place installing it right now. He also found himself a hand sander for $25 + $10 for 17 sand belts. He was pleased. I found a leather Texas Sheriff's vest and a Hawaiian shirt for GB - $1 total. I also found a two-sided holder for an arm chair - I'll use it as a prototype to make more from some of the stash.
I applied for a job at an advertising agency this a.m. Getting my feelers out there in my new career path - hopefully I'll get a chance to get my feet wet and start making some good money. I hate leaving the good benefits at UT but since they've paid for the last class that they're willing to cover...time for me to move on and grab some moola. Hopefully Mommie is crossing her toes to bring me some luck.
Ok, I'll get back to getting things off the list. DD, GB and a toddler she'll be babysitting will visit tonight. I have to get busy before they show.
