These are the same specials as broadcast in the US over the past several years, except in Spanish. They include “The Little Shepherd,” “The Christmas Mystery,” “The Town That Forgot Christmas,” “Red Boots,” and “Christmas Is.”

Second American killed in Guatemala in two days
(10 Jan 04) Trespassers fatally shot a U.S. citizen residing in southern Guatemala Friday night while apparently stealing coconuts from the victim's property.

Formerly of Ohio, 62-year-old David Lebold was taken to a hostpital where he died Saturday. Lebold was married to a Guatemala woman and had lived in Guatemala as a permanent resident since 2000.

Lebold's shooting took place just one day following the attack on a group of US tourists in northwestern Guatemala which resulted in the death of Brett Richards, 52, of Utah.

Volcano erupts with fiery display
(9 Jan 04) Volcano Fuego (Fire) erupted Thursday sending ash and lava high into the sky and nearly covering the side facing Antigua.

Although continuously active since the early 1500's, this is Fuego's most dramatic eruption in recent history.

"We have see it erupt before, but nothing like it is today," said Dan Finley, LBT Missionary in Antigua. "With the naked eye we can see the lava or whatever it is being thrown hundreds of feet into the air."

Finley also said nearly three-quarters of the volcano's side was glowing a bright orange during the night.

Government officials report that the eruption poses no imminent danger, but emergency teams are ready to evacuate residents on the side of the volcano if the eruption worsens.

California mudslides kill nine Guatemalans
(31 Dec 03) California's Christmas day mudslides killed fifteen people, including nine Guatemalan immigrants who were celebrating Christmas at a Christian camp.

Twenty-eight Guatemalans were at Camp St. Sofia at the invitation of the camp caretaker, Jorge Monzón, and his family. Monzón, originally of Santa Bárbara, Suchitepéquez, Guatemala also pastored a local evangelical church.

Monzón came to California fourteen years ago in hopes of providing a better life for his family and for his disabled brother, who remained in Guatemala. Four years later, his wife and two children were able to join Monzón in California. While living in California, they had two additional children. Only a few months ago, their home was burned in California's wildfires. Monzón and his family were among those who died.

The remains of the victims are being transported to Guatemala for burial.

This is the largest number of Guatemalans to die abroad due to a natural disaster, according to Guatemala officials.

Greetings from Puerto Barrios!
From LBT Missionaries Allen and Sheri Larsen

The year 2003 has come and gone...we will have to fill you in on the various happenings in the Larsen house.

We moved again this year. We were told on May 31st that the landlady needed to move back into her house. We found a new place, packed and moved by June 11th. Now that was quite the experience. Everyone took their turn with the 48-hour bug going around Barrios during three days of moving. I think the temperatures were quite high as well.
