LBT Director has heart attack |
(4 May 04) Walter DeMoss suffered a heart attack yesterday afternoon while at work and the LBT offices in Aurora, Ill. Thinking the pains were related to an exisiting shoulder injury, DeMoss ignored them until the afternoon. He left work earlier and drove himself to a walk-in care center. At the center, medical personnel immediately sent Demoss to surgery. Surgeons inserted three stints in two arterial locations. DeMoss will remain in the hospital for a few days before being released for home rest and recovery. In about four weeks doctors will perform an "echo test" to determine any damage to the heart. This is the second heart attack for DeMoss, but much less severe than the previous one he expereienced while in Thailand in 2001.. | By the Light of the Lamp |
By the Light of the Lamp March 2005JOY, JOY, JOY We love taking care of people! This has been evident since the early days of our marriage. Some people are famous for bringing home stray dogs and cats. In our case, Dan quickly became known for bringing home stray people. As an airline employee, he frequently walked into the house after work with a stranded traveler in tow. One evening he appeared with a family of four. We quickly made up beds in our camper trailer and helped them get settled until they were able to make arrangements to leave town a few days later. When Dan completed his career with Northwest Airlines in Grand Forks, North Dakota, his fellow employees thoughtfully honored him with a certificate for his “Instant Hotel-Motel Service.” |

School forced to change name |
(30 Nov 04) The three-old Lutheran school of Castillo Fuerte Lutheran Church in Guatemala City had to change it's name recently after finding the school's administrator had never filed the required paperwork with the federal government. While reorganizing the administration and other school leadership, the church discovered the former prinicpal had not registered the school, even though doing so was one of her primary responsibilities. The principal resigned from the school before the error's discovery and there are reports she is soliciting support from United States' donors without revealing the fact she no longer is with the school. Castillo Fuerte Lutheran Church opened the elementary day school by the same name in 2002 to serve the educational and spiritual needs of over 100 children from church families, neightborhood families, and families living in Guatemala City's infamous garbarge dump. After discovering the problem, church acted quickly to register its school, but government denied it permission to operate under the same name. The church then chose "The Lutheran School of Guatemala" as the new name. The church leadership wants to make it clear that this is the name of its school and any claims by others in Guatemala of a "Castillo Fuerte Lutheran School" are erroneous and misleading. To contact the church and school leadership, the email contact is nuryguatemala@yahoo.com
| Indiana gifts arrive in Guatemala |
Guadalupe Zamora inspects one of the many bikes donated by Indiana Lutherans. |
(22 Nov 04) After a year of planning, gathering, packing, and paperwork, a shipping container of gifts from Indiana Lutherans has arrived in and delivered to the Lutheran church in Santiago Zamora.Dozens and dozens of boxes of clothing, shoes, blankets, and other items are now being organized by the members of the church for distribution. Their hope is to assemble a package of gifts for families not only of the church and school, but for the families who have their children in the government school as well. |
"We will call the [government social agency] so they can take pictures of the people receiving the gifts," said Guadalupe Zamora, administrator of Redentor del Mundo Lutheran School. He explained that letting the agency see that the gifts were being shared with others would help make future gifts possible. Guatemala suffers pandemic corruption so such evidence very important. The shipment included twelve refurbished computers complete with keyboards and monitors. Most will equip the school's computer lab which until now has had only two computers for classes. Two of the donated computers are going to CPTLN, the local office of the Lutheran Hour Ministries. Orphan Train provided the shipping and logistical support for this gift from Indiana Lutherans to brethren in Guatemala. Once in Guatemala, the office of the President's wife took care of the customs requirements and transporting the container from the coastal port to Santiago Zamora. |

| More on robbery of Guatemala missionaries |
(20 Nov 04) Missionaries Ken and Stacy Shaw, their daughter Cristina, and Diane Nelson were robbed in the Shaw home Tuesday night by three armed men.Posing as investigative police, the men forced themselves into the Shaw home when Diane Nelson arrived to have dinner with the family. When Ken Shaw arrived he unknowingly entered the house and was immediately confronted by the criminals. The missionaries were threatened with violence, rape, and even murder if they did not satisfy the demands for a large amount of money. Apparently, the thieves did not realize they had attacked a missionary home, as they continually insisted the Shaws turn over guns, too. During the ordeal the Shaws and Nelson witnessed to the men and prayed together (in Spanish) for everyone. The three men ransacked the home and took " what money they found and many small items of value...and left without saying anything or bothering us," writes Ken Shaw. Even though not physically harmed, the missionaries are continuing to deal with emotional trauma. "We remember the threats that were made," continues Shaw, "the look of certainty in their eyes that if they were not satisfied they would have followed up on their promises. "We continue to place all our hope, trust, and faith in Christ and struggle to continue forward in service to our Lord and Savior...We thank Him for the comfort that this knowledge provides and we thank each of you for taking the time to care." |

CALMS reaches out to Guatemala schools |
(19 Nov 04) A Texas-based mission society is expanding its minstry to two Lutheran schools in Guatemala.CALMS, Central American Lutheran Mission Society, which has been active in Panama for several years, now is working to match some of Guatemala's poorest children with stateside sponsors who will help make a Christian education a reality. CALMS wants to help children from Guatemala City's "dump" attend Castillo Fuerte Lutheran School. These children have been identified by "Servant's Heart" Ministries, an independent Lutheran ministry to the residents in the dump. The second school CALMS is assisting is Redentor del Mundo Lutheran School, located in a small, rural village. Redentor del Mundo's students come from Maya indigenous families, the poorest segment of Guatemala society. James Pressnell, CALMS Executive Director, is looking for people who will support students with a $35 monthly gift. Pressnell can be reached at calms@calms.org or 281-535-0791.
