Guatemala shuts down infamous army base |
(13 May 04) An army base made infamous during Guatemala's violent 36-year long civil was was closed down Wednesday as part of the government's promises to decrease the size of its military forces. The Santa Cruz de Quiché (key-CHAY) base was one of several locations where suspected insurgents were taken never to be seen again. Over the course of the conflict an estimated 200,000 people were killed or disappered, 90% being civilians of Maya descent. One provision of the 1996 peace accords was to decrease the size of Guatemala's military. It is the largest in Central America with over 27,000 personnel. Closing the bases is one step the new administration is taking to fulfill that promise. |

| Holy Week is the biggest celebration |
(12 May 04) Holy Week in Guatemala is the biggest celebration of the year, except Good Friday is highlighted, not Easter Sunday. They have many processions...parades featuring the dead body of Christ. I saw one last year and felt that was enough. Pray that Guatemalans would see the real reason to celebrate is Jesus’ resurrection, not his death. Many people leave the city to go to Antigua, where the processions are or go to the beach. I stayed in the city and worked on a paper I have to write. Our church had Good Friday and Easter Sunday services. After church on Sunday, there was an Easter egg hunt for the children and Easter breakfast for everyone. |

| Project JOEL changes lives |
(6 May 04) At a time when gang violence is exploding in Guatemala, at least some young people are seeing a better way, thanks to the outreach efforts of Project JOEL, a minsitry of Christ for all the Nations (CPTLN) as the Lutheran Hour is known internationally.Project JOEL is active in several public and private schools in Guatemala City, Central America’s largest city of nearly three million. The ministry has regular activities at the schools, offering an option of a better life to young people surrounded by poverty, drugs, and violence. Wilfredo is one of those whose life changed after two Project JOEL leaders began visiting his school. At first, he thought the two women who began the ministry wouldn’t last long. “We’ll quickly scare them so they won’t come back here to talk to us about God,” said Wilfredo about Rebeca de Franco and Betty de Vallejo of CPTLN. Wilfredo didn’t think he or others would actually harm the women, but he knew the gangs would easily run them off. All that changed when one day at home he read one of the pamphlets distributed by Betty. As he read, he discovered how much God loved and cared for people like him. His attitude and way of thinking began to change. Now Wilfredo regularly attends church and wants to share this Good News with other young people. “I can only say that God is doing great things in my life,” Wilfredo said. “On Sunday, May 2, I’m going to be baptized.” Wilfredo thanks God for bringing JOEL to his school. “Now I want to be a volunteer for JOEL and share what God has given to me.” |

| Volunteer Update by Eunice Florip |
(30 Apr 04) Our class, "Deacons and Deaconesses" continues with the three members of our church, two of them having taken courses so that they have been commissioned as deaconesses for St. Andrew Lutheran Church here in Kingston. They are wonderful ladies, doing any task that comes along and always with a willing heart! Our course is tracing the history of the service of women in the churches over the centuries, and we will also try to help see how these services are part of God's overall plan for His church. One thing we have learned is that, over the centuries, there have been many changes in offices of service to congregations, both in men and women's roles. Often, these changes caused difficulties for the church. Sound familiar? Yes, differences have always tried to disrupt the church. |

New congregation born in Lutheran school |
(27 Apr 04) A new congregation has been established from families with children attending a large Lutheran school in Bolivia, South America. “We also have a congregation in Jesus the Teacher School,” said Mario Delgado, the school director. Delgado said the church was established with ten charter members and seven baptisms. Delgado said evangelism opportunities in the school and area are numerous. “[We] are in a good zone for the planting of God's Word and we see that the power of His word is being manifested” Jesus the Teacher School is located in Cochabamba, a major Bolivian city (pop. 482,857) found in the middle of the country among the Andes mountains. Jesus the Teacher School has 631 students in elementary through high school. The fast-growing school expects an enrollment of almost 1000 within the next few years. Pastor Rene Mendoza, Elena Chamaco, and Juan Pablo Mancilla teach the school’s Bible classes. The Norwegian government built the school structure as an AID project for Bolivia. The Bolivian government then gave it to the Norwegian Lutheran Church to operate. The schools also receives assistance from the Children’s Christian Concern Society (CCCS), a Christian education mission agency based in Kansas. |
