Easter sawdust "carpets" make way for the Christ

During the Lent-Easter season, Guatemalans create colorful carpets for use during processions.
(19 Apr 04) The six weeks leading up to Easter are some of the most color and religiously active in Guatemala. From the smallest villages to the largest cities, people are busy with colorful, dramatic processions of the Christ.

First grader gives to Guatemala kids
(13 Apr 04) When Maxwell Lawson has a birthday his gift list is not for things he wants, but for things children in Guatemala need.

The seven-year-old first grade student of St. Paul Lutheran School, Muenster, IN, has been thinking of his less fortuntate friends for years, but even more after his mother first took him along on mission trips with the Hearts in Motion organization.

Maxwell sometimes asks for specific gifts to send to Guatemala, like shoes or backpacks filled with school supplies and vitamins.

Maxwell's mom, Melissa Lawson, wants her son to be aware of how children live in other parts of the world and how fortunate he is. The two traveled to Guatemala so Maxwell could see what it the country is like and interact with the children.

American injured in Antigua by grenade
(13 Apr 04) An Anchorage woman and two Guatemalans were wounded by a grenade in the streets of Antigua, Guatemala on Easter day.

Jessica Haines, 22, was walking to one of Antigua's famous Easter processionals when she was injured. The origin of the grenade is unclear, but authorities say Haines was not a direct target of an attack.

Haines was taken to Antigua's Hermano Pedro Hospital, where she underwent surgery by the hospital's surgeon.

"Last night we performed surgery, because a metal fragment penetrated the stomach and diaphragm," said Dr. Carlos Bonilla, who operated on Haines. "She is recovering normally and should be able to leave the hospital in about five days."

The two Guatemalans were also hit by fragments, but did not require hospitalization.

Pollo Campero comes to PB

The Larsen family enjoy the arrival of Pollo Campero in Puerto Barrios.
(12 Apr 04) Most readers may not see the big deal of a fast food chicken place opening in town. Most readers haven't been to Puerto Barrios, Guatemala.

In the Third World, good, clean, economical, and enjoyable places to eat out are hard to come by. More often, choosing the right place to eat is a trade off of sorts: cleanliness for price; price for risk of a stomach ache.

That's not the case in the Guatemalan coastal city of Puerto Barrios...not any more. Pollo Campero has arrived!

Somewhat an enigma in both the fast food world and the Third World, Pollo Campero (pronounced POE-yoh kahm-PEHR-row) offers well-prepared meals in clean, modern restaurants, for prices lower than your local KFC. And, you get a waitress and smile with that.

To Our Fellow Missionaries:
That's you! If you follow Chirst, He has a mission for you, an assignment from God Himself, the Author of Life. Sounds pretty important, huh? Well, it is. We are surrounded by so many who are aching for some kind of hope. We must not grow weary of sharing that hope we cherish in Christ Jesus. Let's lift each other in prayer to carry on our mission.

SERVANT AND/OR SLAVE

A few of the many things that make translating the Bible into another language challenging are the following: Sometimes there are no equivalent words in the target language, sometimes the target language doesn't have the concept, and there can be a huge difference or contrast of cultures.

One of the things that many translation teams have to wrestle with is "servant-slave" subject. In the Roman world at the time of Jesus, slavery was very common, and so were hired servants. I the New Testament, there is one Greek word for "slave," and it occurs many, many times. There are at least seven Greeks words for "servant," which occur some, but few times in comparison with the word "slave." However, many translations in English render all of these as "servant," and never use the word "slave."

This should be in a book!
An older Filipino periodically helped in the translation of God’s Word into his language. One day he was asked to help record Scriptures for his language group. Day by day, phrase by phrase, he spoke the message into the microphone. As the recording process brought the written message to life, his enthusiasm grew. With amazement in his voice, he turned to the translator and said, “This material is really good. You should put in into a book!”
