12/31/2004 - Teaching Values to Teens
High school football coach and former NFL star, Joe Ehrmann, is building character while he teaches boys athletic skills. He is debunking the three false goals that have come to measure manhood in our culture and teaching boys how to become men of substance by focusing on relationships and a cause beyond themselves. (The principles are applicable to girls as well.) His story was featured on the cover of the August 29, 2004 Parade magazine and you can hear an interview with him and the Pultzer Prize-winning author of their book, "Season of Life," on an archived audio version of the December 16,2004 Diane Rehm Show. .

5/29/2002 - Losing Weight Could Save Your Life
According to an editorial in the May 25th edition of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, poor diet and lack of exercise kill more Americans in 2 years than AIDS has killed in the last 20 years! The article states that 35% are overweight and an additional 26% are classified as obese. No wonder diabetes rates have increased by 33% over the last decade.

Obesity among adults has doubled since 1980, while overweight among adolescents has tripled! In 1999, an estimated 61% of U.S. adults were overweight, along with 13% of children and adolescents. For more information go to Office of the Surgeon General and type in "overweight" or "obesity" in the search box or just click on Surgeon General's Call to Action.

A panel of experts discussed "Childhood Obesity" Thursday 2/28/02 on the Diane Rehm radio show at 10 am on KWMU at 90.7 FM. You can listen to an archive of the broadcast by clicking on Diane Rehm show archives and choosing the appropriate link under February 28.

Does America need to change the way its dying are treated?
Most people say they prefer to die at home, but today the majority of people still die in hospitals. Channel 9 aired a Bill Moyers TV series, On Our Own Terms: Moyers on Dying, that depicted how our system of caring for the terminally ill needs to be reformed. A St. Louis organization, the Gateway End-of-Life Coalition, has been formed in response to this program. They can be reached at 314-729-4401 for further information.
