This will be quiet, unstructured time, where people may come and go as they please, light a prayer candle if they like, and spend time in prayer for the needs of our church, our community, as well as for themselves or their families. Prayer is ancient and effective practice within our Christian faith; this is an opportunity to practice this discipline in an intentional manner.

On Sunday, Oct. 2, following worship at around 9:40 AM, Laura von Goertz, a Registered Dietitian and Head of Dietary at Lake View Hospital, will do a presentation on safe food handling for all who will be volunteering at the Fishcake Dinner. This is to place us in compliance with a new Minnesota State law which requires such training for large public meals being served out of churches. If we do not hold such a training, we could not hold our Fishcake Dinner! So, whether you are involved in the preparation or serving of the food, you are strongly encouraged to plan and attend this training session. We are extremely appreciative of Laura for doing this for us; we otherwise would have had to send someone to a costly training event to become a Certified Food Manager. If you wonder if YOU need to attend, the answer is “yes”!

Each year the Two Harbors Christian Ministerial Association receives an offering for one or more of its on-going ministries. Thanksgiving Sunday/ELCA World Hunger Appeal Sunday. Using our Bread of Life Celebration Service, we’ll celebrate Holy Communion by intinction. <p> Each year, every congregation in our Northeastern Minnesota Synod is asked to highlight our Hunger Appeal on a Sunday of our choosing. This year, we will emphasize this important ministry and receive a special offering for World Hunger on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, Nov. 19. Our ELCA World Hunger Appeal is one of the best possible ways for us to help those who struggle with issues of hunger and poverty. Sadly, hunger continues to be a devastating issue for our world and our country. Worldwide, more than 800 million people are hungry. In developing countries, six million children die each year, mainly from hunger related causes. In our own country, nearly 36 million people now live below the official poverty line, including 13 million children. Amazingly, three billion people around the world live on less than $2 a day! Yet, one dollar of ours can feed a hungry refugee, an AIDS orphan, or a street child for a day. Last year, our congregation was 5th in giving to World Hunger, percentage-wise, in our synod. This year we will want to continue our tradition of generosity, so remember to give the ELCA Hunger Appeal on this Sunday!
