Gulf Coast Chapter
Coordinators become involved with annual training
Every year, usually around February or early March coordinators of Lutheran congregations gather to enjoy a day of learning and fellowship. This year the gathering was held at St. John Lutheran Church in Robstown, where the Women of the Church prepared a delicious barbecue lunch complete with desert.

Mariposa Park prior to clean-up ________________________________

A homeless shelter discovered during clean-up ___________________________________________
Each year Fraternal Benefit Societies gather to benefit an area of the community. In 2008 The Gulf Coast Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans teamed up with the YMCA of the Coastal Bend and the City of Corpus Christi to clean up a much neglected park just below the YMCA in Corpus Christi. Youth and adults picked up saws, rakes, loppers and pruning shears to clean up Maripos Park.
Gulf Coast Chaper Sponsors Park Clean Up
Artist Michael Manjarris created Mariposa Park in November, 1989 with the help of several homeless persons. Pictured below are volunteers from the YMCA of the Coastal Bend, several Lutheran congregation members, and leaders of the Gulf Coast Chapter fulfilling a morning of work during Join Hands Day 2008.

A little lower on the page are what appears to be colorful clay impressions of fishes, boats and other symbols pressed into the concrete. From the park is a sweeping view of Corpus Christi Bay. The park is located just below the YMCA of the Coastal Bend on South Chapparal Street in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Established in November of 1989 Mariposa Park is only a short distance from downtown Corpus Christi. At one time, on the bluff side of the park, were metal cut-outs of cows on skewers that waved in the wind about 20 or so feet above the ground.

Stay away from the dunes. The dunes along Padre Island are known for one of natures most dangerous creatures, the rattle snake. The dunes also protect the island from waves that may result from hurricanes and tropical storms.

The National Seashore at Malaquite Beach
Here you will find approximately 3 miles of pristine shoreline, just full of nature's beauty.
There are a number of beautiful ocean creatures, but don't mess with the Man-O-War jellyfish that wash up. Leave them to the seagulls and other predators to pick up.
