How can we as a congregation reach out to the surrounding community in a new and meaningful way? That was the question facing the congregation of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Largo, Florida.

Thus, the Back-To-School Health and Safety Fair was born. It began as an intergenerational vision of the Director of Christian Education and the Parish Nurse. Our vision was to invite the community to be our guests for a special open house before the start of school. As guests, there would, of course, be no charge for anything.

Along with medical and emergency friends, we invited 28 community providers, including the American Red Cross, Drug Free America Foundation, Safe Kids Drowning Prevention, the Largo Library, the Sickle Cell Anemia Society, Largo Recreation, a poison control center representative, 4H, a pediatric dentist, the local diabetes and epilepsy societies and representatives from boy/girl scout troops, a martial arts school, and many more.

About forty people of Prince of Peace volunteered to make the fair a success. For weeks members had been bringing new books and school supplies, so each child could select two items to take home. Volunteers staffed the book/supply table, the kitchen, and the Prince of Peace Ministry table. Some served as photographers or dressed as clowns. Our teens painted faces. Morton Plant Hospital taught us how to apply casts to fingers. Of course, the children got to choose which finger to cast, which hopefully will lessen their apprehension if they ever break a bone. Some of our nurses and paramedics took blood pressures and did vision screenings. Other members served as registrars and staffed a video room, so children could be entertained while waiting for physicals. Many members served as a welcoming presence for guests.

Perhaps the best gift this year was the gift of discovery. As in years past, there were several families who had never brought their children for a physical examination. Fortunately, just weeks before school’s first bell, our physicians discovered that a young child was blind in one eye. Now he’ll be able to begin school with the help he will need for a solid and encouraging start.

“Let the little children come to me and do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.”

Hope Lutheran Church held its First Annual Unfashion Show to benefit funding a new roof between their sanctuary and Fellowship Hall. The roof was in bad shape and was taken down just prior to its falling down on its own. Several men suffered minor injuries while working to make the breezeway safer. For the first time ever, take a look at these remarkable new(?) fashions…

A new daring outfit, this slip-over-sweater is destined to create talk where-ever it is seen. The versatility of this outfit is amazing in that it can also be worn as sweater over slip! This Bill Glass creation is modeled by Miss Woll Cardigan.

What ever happened to the popular box suit? You’ll be happy to hear that the box suit is back on the fashion scene again, for the jet-set lady going places or being sent places. Designed by Southern Waste & Packaging Products of Dallas, modeled by Miss Cardie Board.

Watch heads turn as you walk into a room wearing this invigorating creation – the Tea Shirt. The straw hat is the perfect accessory for this brisk creation. Mr. Lipton Teabags is the designer and modeled by Mr. Tea Leaves. Available at The Tea House of the August Moon (check your Yellow Pages).

This sensational edition is appropriately named the Crop Top! These tops come in a variety of styles ranging from radishes on ruffles to carrots and cucumbers. These tops are to be worn only in Spring and Summer as after that its fresh look seems to wilt, turn brown, and fall apart! Made by Farmer Jones, this creation is modeled by Miss Cue Cumber and available at Franks Garden Center.

For the big night out on the town comes this one of a kind tuxedo with tails. This costume (if you will) was the basis for the hit song “I got a Tiger by the Tail.” This tux is complimented by the elegant top hat and English walking stick. Necessary accessories are a complete wardrobe. Available at Squire Tux Limited industries Sales and Rental, this fashion “Tiger in Your Tank” by Happy Motoring and modeled by Mr. Formal Ware.

Lutheran Church of the Cross and Hope Lutheran Church partnered with two Girl Scout Troops to host a Baby Shower for ALPHA House, a crisis pregnancy center. Laundry baskets were filled to the brim with much needed items for a new baby. ALPHA House moms-to-be were gracious to receive such generosity. Thank you to all who donated baby items to make this Join Hands Day a whopping success.

It's a Baby Shower!
