Hope?
I just can t see itA little boy and his father were out late one night. For weeks the man had been telling him about an eclipse that was going to occur. Finally the night came.
As father and son looked at the bright full moon, clouds filled the sky. They waited for what seemed an eternity to the little boy. He frequently pouted, "We re never going to see it."
The boy got very sleepy. He could hardly keep his eyes open. Eventually, however the clouds thinned. Just before he fell asleep in his father s arms he got to see his eclipse.
The world in which we live often disappoints us. People make promises to us. From political candidates to family members, the story is the same. We hear the promise, but we don t see the fulfillment. We keep on hoping for a while. When nothing happens, we give up.
A man named Abraham knew what it felt like to wait and wait for a promise to be fulfilled. The Lord had promised that Abraham would have a son. He got older and older, but no son. He got to be over 90, in fact. Abraham did not give up, however. As the Bible says, "Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him" (Romans 4:18). Not only did he have a son, he became the ancestor of many nations.
You see, Abraham didn t put his hope in another person. He put his hope in his God and Savior. He never disappoints.
God may not answer his promises on our timetable, but he always does fulfill them.
During Lent, we remember that God sent hope into the world by the Savior, Jesus Christ. He came to earth, lived a perfect life, and paid for our sins on the cross. When we put our hope in him, we need never be discouraged.
Just can t see it you say? Wait a little longer. You will. Our God and Savior always comes through.
