Update Game Rules: |
- E-mail games are played every Monday and Wednesday as part of the intro of my Wisconsin Weather Update.
- Entries must be received before the next update is sent out, which is usually around 6:30 a.m., Central time on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
- People can submit answers either by replying to my E-mail, or if you read my update on the Web, you can click on the "Play the Games / Feedback" link to submit your answer.
- Please do not use any search engine to find the answer to any of my games.
- Point standings are released every Friday morning and are cumulative through the season.
- Seasons are every three months, and change with the Earth's seasons.
- The top eight finishers with one week left in the current season (plus any ties) will be eligible to compete in the Update Playoffs. A ninth and tenth slot will be filled by the person (not in the top eight) who get the most points during double point week to end the regular season. In the event of a tie, whoever had more points up to that point will get the automatic bid into the big dance. So if you played horribly that season (or even if you barely played at all), then do really well in that last week, you could crash the party and still get into the playoffs. This rule change will make everyone still eligible to make the playoffs and perhaps even win the championship on the last week of the regular season.
- In the Update Playoffs, the scores are erased and most of the games are played once over a one-week playoff period.
- To start the playoffs, the top four finishers will receive a two-point bonus. The next four will receive one point (plus ties), and the two people with the most points during double-point week will not receive any bonus points heading into the playoff week.
- The overall winner will be the playoff participant with the most points at the end of the one-week playoff session.
- A weather-related prize is given away to the top finisher at the end of each season (if they have not won previously). The Autumn, Winter and Spring seasons have a $30 maximum prize budget while the Summer season winner is entitled to a maximum prize worth $10. Note that the winner is welcome to use this prize money as a subsidy to purchase a more expensive item (such as a NOAA weather radio). Up to $100 in weather-related prizes are given away each year!

Mad Gab
Ignoring punctuation and word spacing, these seemingly random set of words actually make out a common phrase. Three puzzles are given and people get one point for each correct answer. While I don't take off for simple spelling errors, if the guess either adds or removes a syllable or word from the correct answer, it unfortunately doesn't get credit. One bonus point is also given out to people who respond with at least one correct answer in the order specified within that day's intro (like a DJ giving away a prize to the 9th caller). Also, if less than half of the people who respond get it correct, those who did get it right will receive an extra point.
Scattergories
Your job is to give me one answer to each topic that begins with the starting letter. However, make it clever and unique, as all entries that are duplicated by someone else will not receive credit. Scoring is based on the total of unique, unchallenged answers that start with the given letter (limit of one guess per person per topic). The first word cannot be an adjective unless otherwise specified, proper names (if allowed for that topic) should use the starting letter of the last name, and you can't use the same word for more than one topic during that week's game. On Wednesday, a list of all answers will be given out, and players have one day to challenge as many entries as they wish (that they believe should not be allowed credit) on my message board. On Thursday, a list of all challenged answers will be included in that day's update, and players have one day to vote Yea or Nay on whether each entry should be accepted for points. Final results will be in Friday's update, along with the current point standings. In the event of a tie, the moderator (me) will make the final decision.
Family Feud
Respond with one answer to each of the two topics. Every person responding with the #1 most popular answer among all entries received receives two points per topic. Every person with the #2 most popular answer will receive one point. Just like the TV show, all answers must have at least two submissions to be eligible for points. In the case of a tie, both sets will receive the same point value for that topic.
Match Game
Fill in the blank to each of the two sentences or phrases. For every five (5) matches (people who respond with the same answer), you'll get a point. The total point value of the game is limitless and based on the number of people who play that day's game.
Outburst
I will give you one topic. On the Hasbro card, there are ten answers to each topic. Your job is to email me four answers to the one topic, and you will get one point for each answer that is also listed on the card. You may think of many more great answers, but only answers that are also on the card will receive credit, so blame Hasbro if you have any complaints. :) Also, a bonus point will be awarded to those whom respond with the least popular answer that is still listed on the card.
Would You Rather...
Choose what you think will be the most popular answer from the two choices given. You cannot ask for clarification or state certain conditions - you have to choose one or the other using only the information given. One point will be awarded per topic to those who write in with the more popular answer for each game. If you get all three correct, a bonus point is awarded. Also, one extra credit point will be awarded if I use your topic suggestion in the game.
Power of 10
Americans were polled by an independent public opinion research firm on a variety of questions, and two questions from an episode of the series are below. It is your job to give me what percentage of Americans answered yes to each question that is asked. If your answer is within 20% one way or the other, you get one point. If you're within 10%, you get two points, and if you are within five percent, you'll get three points per question. The correct percentages will appear in the next update, along with a breakdown of how everyone guessed.
Wheel of Fortune
Three puzzles are given and people get 1-4 points for each correct answer. Each line represents one word, and 10 of the 26 letters of the alphabet are already filled in, similar to the bonus round on the actual game show. An algorithm is used to determine each puzzle's point value, with most puzzles being worth either 1-2 points. Puzzles with higher point values will usually be tougher puzzles with fewer letters filled in. If a player gets all three puzzles correct, one bonus point is awarded. Also, if less than half of the people who respond get it correct, those who did get it right will receive an extra point.
Chain Reaction
There will be two chains in each update, and each chain will consist of four words. I will give you the top and bottom word, along with the first letter of the two middle words. Your job is to tell me what the two middle words are. Each correct word will be worth one point, with four points possible each game day. Note that although there may be times when several words might fit, only the official answer taken from the TV show will be accepted for credit. Teams on the TV show only get a few seconds to figure out these "speed chains" but you get a whole day!
Camouflage
Each camouflage is a one or two-word answer, a clue is given below each, and the answer is literally right in front of you. However, additional unnecessary letters have been randomly mixed in with the correct answer. Each correct response will be worth one point for one-word games and two points for two-word games.
iMAgiNiff...
You will see two different topics that all start with "Imagine if ________ were ..." followed by six choices. The blank will be filled in with a celebrity's name. Similar to Would You Rather, pick the choice that you believe will be the most popular response from all players that day. Points will be scored like Family Feud with two points going to the most popular choice and one point to the second-most popular response. In the real game, you're supposed to guess what the dealer would choose, with the dealer changing each round, but that won't work in this mass-email format where everyone doesn't know everyone else on the list.
TriBond
Three words are given that all have something in common. Your job is to tell me what these words have in common. Two puzzles are given and people get two points for each correct answer. Also, if less than half of the people who respond get a TriBond correct, those who did get it right will receive an extra point.
Extra Credit

Spring 2007 Playoff Point Standings |
In the closest finish in Weather Update game history, we have a four-way tie for first place! While it is tempting to have a four-way playoff for the championship, the rules stated at the beginning of the season that in the event of a tie, whoever has the most points in the regular season wins it all. So by four regular season points, rookie Brian F. has won the Spring 2007 Season! Just how close was this thing? If Becky and her dad would have answered "A" for Rather game #2 on Thursday, they would have won. If Angie would have said Bride or Groom for Outburst on Wednesday, she would have won. There will be games each day next week, and as usual, everyone is welcome to play and submit answers but I'll only be keeping track of the points for the playoff participants. This list is unofficial through the weekend, just in case I goofed up in calculating the points, so make sure what I have tallied for you is correct. We have a new champion!! My long-time friends Dan and Lin from Henderson, Nevada have pulled off an improbable comeback victory of incredible proportions! Dan missed three games early in the season while preparing for and attending the NAMM (music products industry) show, and sent me a note afterwards stating, "I've been in California for NAMM - what a crazy bunch of days! So I'm probably too far behind in the games to matter, but I'm going to play anyway, 'cuz its fun!" Dan and Lin were tied for 33rd place after Week Four, but then they rattled off three straight perfect weeks near the end of the season to eke their way into the bottom of the playoff ladder. Starting with zero bonus points, they had one more perfect week in them, apparently didn't even need the bonus point they got from Outburst on Wednesday, and they take home their first championship! For their troubles, Dan and Lin have decided to win themselves a new S.A.M.E. weather radio! Congratulations, Dan and Lin! For everyone else, thanks for another great season, and look for a new Spring season to begin this Thursday with a game that hasn't been played in over a year! For the first time ever, we have a tie with my step-father-in-law Karl and sister Bethany both having 21 points. -- = moved below the cut line this week.I was beginning to think that the double points week still wouldn't change the final leaderboard, but the very last game did have one change with Barb sneaking in with a big 22-point week! The top of the leaderboard changed each day this week, with Seasons Two and Three winner Nia taking the top spot with a 22-point week as well. Interestingly enough, eight of the players in this season's top ten were also in last season's top ten, with my friends Dan and Jordan being the only exceptions. The rules for next week are simple. Six games over five days, including Monday and Friday, and you'll know who wins the whole thing on Monday, March 20. The current seasonal totals are wiped clean and you only begin with the bonus points listed below, per your final rankings. Even if you didn't make the playoffs, you are very much encouraged to play next week anyway, especially for games like Family Feud, etc., where I need a lot of responses to make for a good, accurate game. To the 30 others who played my games this season, thank you very much for participating, better luck next year (literally) and know that I encourage everyone to play along during the playoffs (since you guys are presumably playing just for fun, right!). However, I will only be calculating the results for the top ten during this time. Congrats also goes to my cousin-in-law Tammy, who was the only one to score all 24 possible points this week! This almost doubled her total for the year, and boosted her up to fifth place! Barb, Tammy, and all three of my sisters: Katie, Bethany, and Kelley, were the only people to get all eight points for Scattergories on Tuesday. Congratulations to Lisa's cousin Tammy who has won the Autumn 2005 championship! Tammy was six points below the cut line before the final week of the season, and has pulled off four consecutive perfect weeks to steal the championship! She hasn't missed a point since November 22!
Note: Yesterday I did not award Tammy any points for Wheel of Fortune, but she said she sent them the previous night and I have a second witness that also said that she did in fact send the three correct answers, so I awarded her three points from Wednesday's game.
