A Brief History Sketch of St. Mark Lutheran Church and School

The home of Constance Ewazen (left) on Ruby Avenue as it appeared at the turn of the century as St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church. The building next door served as the congregational schoolhouse. Both structures are now private residences.

Beginning Years - Pastor Ungemach

1893 - First services held in home of Leopold Lucht; Sunday School organized
1894 - Chapel built on Ruby Avenue
1895 - Day School opened in fall; 25 students
1897 - St. Mark congregation officially established

Building Years - Pastor Brandes

1908 - Construction began on a new multi-purpose building at the corner of Pearl and Ardmore
1909 - Tornado hits church and school buildings on Ruby Avenue; temporary quarters used
1910 - New church and school building dedicated
1918 - During World War I, change from German to English as main language began
1925 - Present House of Worship dedicated; multi-purpose building now used fully for 220 day school students and 300 Sunday School children; congregation 1,100 souls

Growing Years - Pastor Kuechle

1937 - Chancel rebuilt and reredos added to altar for 40th anniversary of congregation
1944 - Mortgage on church building burned
1947 - Half century of God’s Blessings celebrated; congregation approaches peak membership of almost 1,500 communicants and 1,900 souls; 170 day school pupils; 285 in Sunday School

Rebuilding Years - Pastors Krentz and Werner

1955 - For 30th anniversary of dedication of the church building, new lighting, carpeting, and organ dedicated; redecoration
1960 - Educational, administrative, and recreational addition with 8 classrooms, offices, and gym completed and dedicated
1969 - Indebtedness on addition paid off
1970 - 75th anniversary of congregation’s establishment observed; sanctuary redecorated; narthex carpeting and echo organ installed; congregation now numbers 1,050 communicants and 1,360 souls with 180 students in day school and 140 in Sunday School

Recent Years - Pastor Buck

1972 - Electronic Carillon dedicated on Christmas
1975 - For 50th anniversary of church building’s dedication, new bulletin board and protective covering for stained glass installed
1980 - Lightning strikes church tower; cost of repairs equals original cost of edifice
1985 - Church basement completely modernized
1987 - Present membership totals 975 communicants; 1,350 souls, with 285 in day school and 150 in Sunday School and Bible Classes
