Remembering the WTC Attacks |
The World Trade Center Steel we were given to reinforce our Bell Tower was more than we needed. As of Thursday, September 11, 2003, you may view the extra steel in a cabinet located inside the Gerritsen Beach Branch Brooklyn Public Library. As I understand it, this is the only public place that you may see and feel a piece of the fallen buildings. A dedication ceremony was performed Sat. Sept. 10, 2005.On Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003 we Dedicated a plaque placed at entrance of the Church in Honor of the Memory of the people from Gerritsen Beach who died on September 11th, 2001. | | | Lucy's Lane

St. James Remembers World Trade Center Attack |
On the first anniversary of September 11th, our community, Gerritsen Beach, came together to pray and remember. We were reminded of the people we loved and lost, as well as the thousands who died that day, whom we may never have met, but miss just the same.Through the efforts of many we asked the community to come and remember our loved ones' sacrifice and join us to thank God for the many blessings we received in the last 12 months. During this time we were given steel from the World Trade Center to refurbish our bell supports in our steeple. By Sept. 11, 2002, all was ready, so we dedicated our new bell tower followed by a Healing Service in memoriam to the six who died from Gerritsen Beach. Every year on September 11th, we come to Larry's ball park to remember him and all the victims of that terrible day.

Plaque at base of American Flag |
On April 13, 2002 there was a dedication at the Gerritsen Beach Little League Field to resident hero Larry Veling, a FireFighter from Engine Co. 235, who died saving lives at the World Trade Center on 9/11. This plaque is dedicated to those from Gerritsen Beach who perished that day. God Bless them all! |

The renaming of the Little League fields to the Larry Veling Memorial Field came from an idea generated by many. A lot of people worked very hard to make this dedication happen. A few led the way, organizing friends and family. Their work is admirable and will inevitably go down in Gerritsen Beach history. They are not the type to seek credit for their accomplishment. They did what they did in loving memory of William John Erwin, Lucy Fishman-Springer, Charles "Mel" Houston, Chuck Mendez, Linda Oliva, and Larry Veling. As a result of their love and hard work stands a beautiful new scoreboard, a beautiful new garden surrounding a flagpole, new dirt to level off the field, repaired and painted fencing and repairs to the dugouts. The land surrounding the field was further beautified and cleared of more debris.Toward the end of the Little League Parade ceremonies, the unveiling of the scoreboard and memorial dedication took place. Last year, the Little League Parade experienced one of the largest turnouts in GB history. There were over 2,000 people that took part in the parade and dedication ceremonies. Among the crowd were Firefighters, community groups, leaders, elected officials, and the people who make up our great community. |
