Our Sanctuary Symbols

The weavings in the sanctuary are the work of John Skare, a well known weaver from Bricelyn, MN. Inspiration for the weavings comes from John 10:7, "I am the gate of the sheep." The gates serve as the variable portions of the weavings - a large one with an important church symbol flanked by two smaller ones. The colors vary with the church seasons.

The large cross in the sanctuary is an artisitic combination of a cross with a shepherd's crook. It brings together two fundamentally significant church symbols - the traditional cross representing the means of salvation and the symbol of Christ as the Good Shepherd, the congregation's namesake. The cross was created by individuals representing two of Good Shepherd's important and historic social ministries -Hung Van Pham, a southeast Asian refugee and Stanley Maroushek, an individual with physical disability.

The present sanctuary was dedicated in 1988 on the 30th anniversary of Good Shepherd. The sanctuary was designed in a modified "church-in-the-round" style, a deliberate attempt to emphasize the importance of all members in the ministry of the congregation.
