CHOICES: A Journey With Girls

How Might Your Life Have Been Different?
How might your life have been different if there had been a place for you, a place for you to go to be with your mother, with your sisters and the aunts, with your grandmothers,...a place of women to go, to be, to return to, as woman?

How might your life be different?

This question, and many others like them, raised in CIRCLE OF STONES, by Judith Duerk, forms the premise behind the CHOICES program of SeedFolks Youth Ministry and the Kujichagulia Center. The CHOICES program creates a safe space for girls to come to; a place where they may ask questions, explore who they are, address the challenges and joys of being created female. A place where they are fed physically and spiritually. A place where they are reminded that when God created them, they were branded "good".

CHOICES Trainings for Adult Women
Women who want to begin a CHOICES group or who want to be connected to an existing group are invited to the upcoming trainings for adult facilitators. Training includes self-exploration exercises for women to unpack their own joys and challenges related to being female, experiencing the first session in the CHOICES curriculum during the training, and receiving the first seven CHOICES sessions, step-by-step, in a curriculum packet, along with other instructions and suggestions on how to start a CHOICES group.

The training cost is $20 and may be paid on the day of the training.

You may register for ONE DAY OF TRAINING by calling Venice Williams at 414.687.0122 or emailing her at venicewb@msn.com.

CHOICES Arrives in Ghana, West Africa
Four years ago, Tyanna Clayton participated in a CHOICES training at the Kujichagulia Lutheran Center, along with her mother. Although she stayed connected to Kujichagulia, she did not become a part of the CHOICES ministry. In the winter of 2006, Tyanna took the training again, with a sister Americorps worker, and began the CHOICES group at Clara Mohammed School in Milwaukee, in the spring of that year. That same summer, Tyanna applied for and was accepted into the Peace Corps, and off to Accra North, Ghana. Because of her deep love and concern for girls and women, she took the CHOICES program model with her. Tyanna’s group Is made up of middle-school aged girls at Adabraka Junior Secondary School in Hohoe, the Volta Region of Ghana. The girls have named themselves the Feel Free Girls, “because we feel free to say anything that is important to us in our sessions.” During the months to come, the girls will focus on HIV and AIDS education and other health issues. As Tyanna explains, “I want the girls to become peer educators, to help other girls understand as much as they can about this disease.”
CHOICES Summer Program
22 to 35 girls gathered each Tuesday and Thursday, 9am to 3pm, this summer at Kuji to explore issues of self-esteem, identity, sexuality and culture. They laughed, cried, explored, challenged themselves, and had a great summer. Below are some of their thoughts from a writing activity.

CHOICES girls cooling off on a hot summer afternoon!
The pain in my life...
That I have to deal with other family issues and the choices they make in their lives...
Trying to get good grades and making people happy all the time...
I live in a single parent family and I hardly see my dad...
Because my mom yells at me...
Comes from the pain others go through...
Because my mom is in a wheelchair...
My parents accusing me of things...
Comes from people not believing in me...
Something I hope for...
When I grow up, to be a doctor...
My dad and mom to get back together like before...
I hope I will not have to go through the things my family went through...
To be a movie star and to be a singer...
To have a good life...
To have power...
Peace...
I hope for my mother to get married so I can have a stepdad...
I hope to become a better person in life...
A better way to live in the world...
For my mom to stop hurting...
For people to stop judging me...
To be rich...
To live forever...
To have success in whatever I do...
I hope my father will find me whenever he gets out of jail...
My Fears...
When my mom and dad fight...
Not know where my life will be ten years from now...
To be disappoointed and alone...
Snakes...
That I will not be able to see my mom when she gets older...
A house fire...
To die, my parents not getting back together, that everything will fall apart...
To have my heart broken...
I'm afraid of the night...
I'm afraid of the future...

What I want ...
To be a doctor...
To drive, have a big house and a fine man...
To be a teacher...
To be a magazine editor...
To be a police officer...
To be a Queen...
To just be me...
To be a nurse in the Air Force...
To be heart surgeon...
To be a successful person with great friends...
