The Lutheran Youth Academy
When Venice Williams was called to serve the Milwaukee Lutheran Coalition in 1989, part of her work included the creation of the Urban Youth Academy, a program to assistance youth in Lutheran congregations in Milwaukee as they made academic and vocational decisions during their high school and early college years. The Urban Youth Academy was a successful program that simply “got lost in the shuffle” as other programs such as CHOICES and The Simba Circle were created and flourished. The model of the Urban Youth Academy has been resurrected as The Lutheran Youth Academy (LYA). The Academy offers three to four hour monthly academy sessions.

These sessions include but are not limited to the following areas over a twelve to fifteen-month span:

*Self-assessment (academic,spiritual, talents)
*Guidance in high school course selection
*SAT & ACT preparation
*Assistance and practice in completing college applications *Instruction in essay writing
*Instruction in developing sufficient study skills
*Instruction in developing critical thinking skills
*Time-management workshop
*Introduction to a wide range of church vocations
*Community service projects
*Identification of post-high school scholarship & financial aid sources
