Our Seventh Visit to Rocky Boy

In August we visited Our Saviour's Lutheran Church on the
Rocky Boy Chippawa-Cree Reservation in Montana for our
seventh year in a row.

Eleven of us — 10 by plane and 1 by train — went on the trip
including five of us making the trip there for the first time.
This year all participants were adults.

Our First Tradition: After arriving by plane in Great Falls, we stopped at JB's Restaurant for lunch. (There usually isn't much food on the plane or along the way to Great Falls.)
Beginning at the restaurant in Great Falls it takes about two hours to get to Box Elder and the Rocky Boy Reservation in the Bear Paw mountains. (From Rocky Boy it is about a 60 mile drive to the Canadian border.)

Another Tradition:    We always take a group photo here before we drive the rest of the way to Rocky Boy. Compared to last year, the region was very dry, not green as it was last year.

Here are the 10 who came by plane: Marlene & Jim Zuch, Pastor Hoffman, Robin Ackin, Danielle Evans, Joe & Loretta Portner, Bob & Peggy Swope, and Dick Hoffman

One big job the group undertook was to finish filling the screw holes and taped areas in the garage preparing it for use in the winter.

Here Danielle, Robin, Marlene, and Jim are hard at work.

We also undertook to repaint the Chapel interion now that the new windows have been installed. This required us to remove the pews and move the various items out of the way.

Pastor Hoffman, Joe, Bob, Gene, and Dick were primarily involved with this task.

Loretta and Peggy did most of the food preparation and were the ones primarily involved with the Back-To-School kits, although everyone occasionally helped with this project.

Here is the garage when we finished our work for the week,

. . . and here is the Chapel.

We also installed an outside door on the rear of the Mission House.

No visit to Rocky Boy would be complete without the Round Dance, led by Gordon Gray, his brother, and his son in the drum circle.

The afternoon Grand Entry
begins with the Colors.

The dancers dress was
stunning, as usual.

Although it took us almost 6 hours, we drove to the Crow Agency below Billings to see their Powwow. The scenery along the way was spectacular, and we saw many herds of deer and antelope as soon as we got below the Little Rockies and Hayes.

The Crow Powwow is famous for the many teepees it attracts.

The battlefield and
the Little Bighorn River.

Site of Custer's Last Stand.

While we were there we went a few miles further to see the site of the battle of the Little Bighorn.

Renewal of Wedding Vows.

Presentation of Quilt.

On Sunday we were priveledged to share on the renewal of wedding vows between Pastor Barden and his wife. Following that, we presented a quilt to the Congregation; the design was sewn by Pastor Ruth.

Sunday afternoon we visited Fort Benton along the Missouri River. The Bridge was a drawbridge during the time the river was an active transportation route.
