Lutheran Church of Mahomet held a fundraiser on May 4th to raise funds for churches in Belarus. The event included dinner, an art sale, and an auction.
Grace Church of Smilovichi and Cherven, Belarus are sister churches that Lutheran Church of Mahomet (LCM) assists with various needs and mission visits. Grace Church in Cherven was opened by members of Grace Church in Smilovichi to ease travel for people from Cherven. Travel is especially difficult during the winter months. This ministry started four years ago (1999) when a member participated ina mission outreach to several villages in Belarus. Two years later, two more members joined the mission outreach with a visit to Grace Church in Smilovichi, Belarus. Pastor Alexandr Ryazanstev was then sponsored for a visit to Mahomet in April of 2002. Following his visit, seven members joined the mission outreach with a return visit to Smilovichi, Belarus in August of 2002. On this occasion, LCM collected items and funds to be given to each family in those churches. Each of the 35 families received a large parcel and $35. The families of LCM have "adopted" the families of Grace by writing letters of encouragement and support. A return mission outreach is planned for 2003.
Belarus used to be part of Russia, but now is an independent state under the control of a governmental regime that persecutes Christian Churches. It is located east of Poland and west of Russia. It shares its southern border with Ukraine. Belarus received 90% of the radiation fallout from Chernobyl.
The dinner / sale / auction generated a total of over $2,200 with over 74 guests participating. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans matched $800, providing total funding of $3000 for this outreach.
