We are writing to you today to tell you about an exciting project in our
community for 2004 for all Lutheran Churches in Champaign County and to
solicit your help in this project.
In March, Habitat for Humanity was awarded a $10,000 grant from Thrivent
Financial for Lutherans to construct another Habitat for Humanity home in
Champaign. This grant requires Habitat to work with a broad-based Lutheran
coalition of volunteers to make this home a reality.
As you likely know, Habitat for Humanity has been building homes in the
region since 1991. During the last 12 years, Habitat has constructed 34
homes for low-income families and helped to house 157 people in our
community, including over 100 children. Housing needs for those of
low-incomes in our community is no secret, and the Thrivent grant is going
to help us put a roof over the heads of Antonette Gant and her young son.
We will be
working with volunteers from about 20 area Lutheran churches to construct
this home, and hope to include your church among those helping to find and
coordinate volunteers for the worksite. We anticipate the construction
season for Antonette's home to run until about Friday, November 12, 2004,
with her family ready to move into their new home in mid-November.
It costs about $66,000 to build one
Habitat home. Usually, we get about $10,000 in materials and labor
donated, and adding in the Thrivent grant, we are left to raise about
$46,000 to complete Antonette's home.
We are very excited by the news of this very competitive Thrivent grant,
and look forward to working with Lutheran Churches and others in the community to make
Antonette Gant's home a reality in 2004. If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact either one of us.
Sincerely,
Bruce Dani
