Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church is set in Galt, CA, in the midst of a quiet residential area just south of Sacramento. We are part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The congregation began in 1949 and has active members of all ages. Our pastor is Mary Sanders, married, mother of three adult daughters. We offer several Bible study opportunities, as well as choir, Sunday School, Confirmation classes and Youth Group. Worship is Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. We enjoy both traditional and contemporary worship. We welcome visitors of all ages and look forward to meeting you as we worship God together. | |

Our Mission: To proclaim the Gospel of Christ through joyful worship, quality Christian education, community outreach and caring fellowship.Means to accomplish our mission:
One of the primary ways we can reach unchurched people and nourish our existing membership is through the weekly worship services. Here we provide a comfortable place for people to come together to hear and study the word and receive the Sacraments. We will, therefore, take specific actions to increase our worship attendance by visitors and existing members by offering a variety of worship experiences, both traditional and contemporary.
In addition to Sunday worship, we will develop and implement programs that respond to the needs of unchurched people as well as existing members. | |

Faith Matters: a Confirmation/Catechism Program |
At Shepherd of the Valley, we use a unique, family oriented confirmation program for our younger members--generally 7th and 8th graders--although sometimes the ages vary. This two-year program is called "Faith Matters". There is a "Bible Year" which provides a basic overview of the Bible, Old and New Testements, and emphasises many of the key events and people which are foundational for the church today. Then, there is the Catechism year, where students learn about Martin Luther's Small Catechismin an in - depth study of The 10 Commandments, The Lord's Prayer, The Apostle's Creed, and the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion.
There are also units on: Understanding the Liturgy, Alcohol and Other Drugs, Stress Management, Family Relationships, and Christian Decision Making.The program is varied and interesting, with games, worksheets, special speakers and much group participation. At the end of the two years, those young people who choose to do so are invited to affirm their baptism in a confirmation service during Sunday morning worship near the end of the school year. The unique aspect of Faith Matters is that PARENTS MUST COME TO CLASS WITH THEIR YOUNG PEOPLE. Of course we are flexible--a grandparent, aunt, uncle or ADULT sibling may join them when a parent's schedule is not able to accommodate their presence. While this may seem a bit unorthodox at first,parents love this learning and growing time with their kids! They have new and exciting things to talk about during the week, (besides homework and chores); class time with their children becomes quality family time; and there are expanded opportunities for parents to fellowship with each other and offer mutual support during what can be the challanging adolescent years. Families don't have to be a current member of this congregation to participate--don't even have to be Lutheran. But beware--you might become one before you are through! | |
