|
Through the Care in Regions program, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans provides funding for members of multiple chapters to come together, through community service teams, and work with their regional manager of Lutheran community services (MLCS) to address a significant regional need(s). The community service teams conduct fund-raising activities, appeals/collections and/or hands-on service activities that benefit individuals, families and not-for-profit organizations (including congregations) with significant needs. All activities are approved by the MLCS.Thanks to the work of several chapters and hundreds of volunteers, in 2005 more than $200,000 was raised to benefit needy children and youth. In 2006, we'll continue to build on our theme of "Helping Needy Children, Supporting Youth Initiatives". The program has been divided into $5,000 funding blocks. If a Care in Regions project is approved, dollars will be supplemented on a one dollar for three dollars raised basis. For example, if multiple service teams raise $15,000, another $5,000 will be added for a total of $20,000. | Tornado Damage-Disaster Response |
With the help of a $3,000 "Care in Regions" grant from Thrivent Finanical for Lutherans, members of Faith Lutheran Church in Hopkinsville, KY, contributed 238 manhours to rebuild the home of a victim of an April 2, 2006 tornado that ripped through western Kentucky. On July 14, this team of volunteers from the Southwest KY Chapter were led by Mike MacDowell, treasurer of the Southwest Kentucky Chapter, who coordinated the project. Workers tore out the old carpet and vinyl flooring throughout the house and replaced it with new flooring and carpet. In addition, workers installed six new ceiling fans with lights in several rooms. A new porch was rebuilt after the debris and remaining porch had been removed. The ceilings in several rooms were repainted and all walls were cleaned thoroughly. Windows had to be repaired and re-set. Mrs. Manningly, a single parent, expressed her appreciation to the church for their hard work and kindness. |

| On October 15, there was a benefit for the family of Myles Hubert, a little boy that suffered from neuroblastoma cancer and recently passed away.
