Families With Children - 2006

Bryan and Linda Schroer Family
Abigail and Tom
Columbus, IN
Bartholomew County Chapter #30834
Bryan and Linda Schroer make volunteering a family affair. While Bryan serves as a congregational coordinator for the Bartholomew County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans—a role that he has filled since the inception of the chapter system—Linda is an active service team volunteer, and daughter Abigail serves as youth director on the chapter leadership board. Son Tom is an advisory member on the chapter board and is expected to fill Abigail’s role when she leaves for college.

The family has been involved in numerous congregational and community service team activities and has played a key role in encouraging others to participate. In addition to Abby’s duties on the chapter board, she and Tom have participated in service team activities that have benefited the annual church smorgasbord dinner (a major fund-raising event), Trinity Lutheran High School, Orphan Grain Train, Pregnancy Care Center and Camp Lakeview.

The Schroer family provides multi-generational leadership by example—often working side-by-side at community events. Both parents relate well to youth volunteers and have a gift of engaging others in meaningful volunteer service. Their volunteer efforts are often directed toward youth-related activities and, working together, the family has volunteered for numerous community causes throughout the year, including 4-H, Trinity Lutheran High School events, Girls, Inc., Anchor House, Turning Point, St. Mary’s School, Muscatatuck State Preserve, as well as their congregation’s own youth group.

Youth/Young Adult - 2006

Kevin Aaron
Marion, IN
Grant County IN Chapter #30852
Kevin Aaron is described as an enthusiastic volunteer who is able to mobilize volunteers of all ages and walks of life. He put those skills to work when a 16-year-old friend was diagnosed with leukemia. Kevin helped organize several community fund-raisers, including a pizza dinner at two local restaurants. With the support of the Grant County IN Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Kevin and his friends publicized the event, waited tables and sold pizzas.

To publicize the fund-raiser, Kevin formed a community service team and took the lead role. He placed event posters throughout the community and submitted a public-service announcement that aired on local radio. He also recruited additional volunteers, including a Lutheran family that became Thrivent Financial members as a result of their involvement in this activity. The pizza dinners were a huge success and surpassed one of the restaurant’s previous records for a charitable fund-raiser.

In an effort to raise additional funds for his friend’s mounting medical bills, Kevin helped organize a special promotion during halftime at a high school basketball game. Each participant obtained sponsors and accepted pledges based on the promise that if they met their goal, they would shave their heads in support of their friend, Katie. Hundreds of personal letters were mailed and each mailer included information on Katie’s diagnosis and personal needs. The event was also publicized in a feature story in the local newspaper, and the promotion raised awareness in the community about this disease as well as raising funds. These efforts involved students, parents, medical professionals and participants of all ages in an effort to help Katie.

Kevin also participated in numerous other community projects last year, including volunteer work at the Bridges to Health community clinic, which provides low-cost and no-cost medical care to individuals in need, and a food-basket missions project to benefit the local community

Pam Selking
Hoagland, IN
Adams County IN Chapter #30832
As a congregational coordinator for the Adams County IN Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Pam Selking has been involved in numerous chapter events and activities.

One of the most significant—both for the chapter and her community—was filling a key role in the local Relay for Life event, which benefited the American Cancer Society. Pam was instrumental in organizing service teams from all six Adams County congregations. These teams prepared and served food for more than 700 Relay for Life participants. In addition, Pam hosted a 40th birthday party and, in lieu of gifts, collected pledges totaling $800 for the activity. She also collected money for her congregation’s commemorative luminaries and, in total, the chapter’s Relay for Life team raised more than $11,000.

Pam is very active in her congregation where she organized a series of Lenten Dinner and Easter Breakfast fund-raisers and chaired the service team that organized a special Confirmation reunion and recognition dinner honoring confirmands from as long as 60 years ago. She is also a member of the church handbell choir and ladies’ guild. Active in her community as well, Pam is particularly involved with the Hoagland Area Advancement Association. For the group’s Octoberfest event, she volunteered for set-up, kitchen detail and clean-up, and served on the clean-up committee for Hoagland Days, which included a breakfast sponsored by her chapter.

Her volunteer activities give Pam many opportunities to work with both youth and adults. She helped recruit volunteers of all ages to support the Hoagland Youth League opening-day chicken BBQ, games and concessions, and brought several youth to a Relay for Life car wash for Join Hands Day. As a member of the Fort Wayne Area Home Schoolers, Pam has organized several youth skating parties, and each week takes youth volunteers to the home of a single mother of triplets to help with chores. Pam also helped organize a team of youth volunteers that visited the Fort Wayne Lutheran Nursing Home and assisted in packing Christmas care packages.

Retired - 2006

Richard Otto
Westfield, IN
Hamilton County IN Chapter #30854
As records director for the Hamilton County IN Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Dick Otto is an active advocate for his chapter and the regional efforts of Thrivent Financial. One project Dick is involved in is a Care in Regions® program campaign to raise funds for a new chapel on the Lutherwood campus of Lutheran Child and Family Services (LCFS) in Indianapolis. Dick served as the lead volunteer advocate for the project, which is close to realizing its three-year goal of raising $140,000, and helped organize a golf outing, dinner event, chapter Christmas celebration and a community-airport open house to benefit the chapel. He also has been an advocate of the GivingPlus® program as a way to leverage additional contributions to LCFS, and all of the proceeds have been directly connected to service-team activities and Care in Regions program funding. Because of the significant fund-raising efforts, Thrivent Financial will have naming rights to the chapel.

Dick volunteers for many other projects in his community, including the Indianapolis Air Show and Thrivent Financial’s Indiana Region’s Volunteer Event, which resulted in a $350,000 donation to Riley Hospital for Children. He also was involved in service teams that supported The Sharing Place, Prevail, Chaucie’s Place, and Open Door projects, all of which received chapter funding and support.

In addition, Dick is an active member of King of Glory Lutheran Church, where he serves on the church council and is often seen helping maintain the buildings and grounds. He is a tireless church and community volunteer, working with both youth and adults. His efforts at the Lutherwood campus involve bringing together youth that stay at the facility with adult volunteers for various projects. He also leads special projects for the church’s preschool, and recruits high school youth to volunteer with the Sertoma Club
