Mid Willamette Chapter

Happenings in the Mid Willamette Valley
2009 Congregational Coordinator Training

The Mid Willamette Valley Chapter held 2 congregational coordinator training sessions at Peace Lutheran in Philomath and St. John Lutheran in McMinnville. Approximately 70 people attended and learned about the work done in the Chapter in 2008 and about the new programs and funding allocation plans for 2009.
Each session started with signup and receiving of materials needed for 2009. Those congregations who sent all 3 coordinators received a $100 bonus. If 3 additional people attended, the congregation will be given a quilt batting.
A major part of any Thrivent activity is food. The ladies of Philomath provided a wonderful selection of homemade cinnamon rolls, fruits and juices.

Congregational coordinators were assigned to plan an activity and fill in all application paperwork required by the Board. Board members then role played a typical Board meeting and assessed the Requests for Funding for appropriate type of event, recipient and required paperwork before "voting" on whether to provide the requested funding.

preceeding the annual dinner.

The Bavarian colors add to the festivities
St John Lutheran Church in McMinnville has hosted an annual Oktoberfest Dinner on the first Saturday in October for over 10 years. This event has consistently been supported by Thrivent supplemental funds and benefits the scholarship fund of the preschool.
St John's Annual Oktoberfest Dinner 2008
German foods are served at the dinner. The highlights are sauerkraut (which many people return for each year), brats simmered in beer and then grilled and pork schnitzel. Desserts have varied from year to year and have included apple strudel, bienenstich (a sweet, cream filled cake) and donated fruit cobblers.

The brats and schnitzel are always grilled outside and we always appreciate good weather!

The annual dinner serves about 175 people who enjoy a good time, good friends and good food.
Thrivent Helps Feed 265 families in Yamhill County

90 people from around Yamhill County gathered together to fill boxes with Thanksgiving food items for feed 265 families. With the help of Thrivent food was purchased from local grocery stores and the dollars were stretched even further through purchasing many items through the local food bank. National Honor Society Students also volunteered by carrying the overloaded boxes to client cars. Thrivent members from St John Lutheran Church helped to coordinate volunteers and setting up the fellowship hall to hold the many boxes of food.

A stuffed animal and handmade card
created by students of St. John
Lutheran Church and Little Lambs
Preschool were added to each box.
