Message from Pastor Toelke
Dear Friends in Christ,
One of the Gospel Lessons that comes after Easter is about Jesus appearing to disciples on the shore of the Sea of Tiberius and making a breakfast of fish and bread on a charcoal fire for them. I thought I might try to write something here about Breakfast with the Risen Christ. Two problems I couldn’t work out. Although Our Redeemer isn’t really that far away from the shore of the Mississippi, my guess is that none of us goes there for breakfast. And, do you normally eat fish for breakfast?
Instead, I figure we can go with something light—like a whenever-you-read-this Bible Class and how Eastern thinking can give us some insight into Jesus’ and our resurrection. Actually, this is the type of thinking we find in most of the Bible and the background of the people in Jesus’ time who spoke Aramaic, a dialect of Hebrew. Eastern thought goes in circles (Another year is another time around the circle.) Western thought is in lines (Another year is an extension to the line.). Think of eternity, a word we say usually means no beginning and no end. Western people think of a line that keeps continuing forever and ever at both ends. Easter people think of a circle. There are no open ends. A circle has no beginning or end—or middle, for that matter. Ancient Eastern languages, like Hebrew, don’t have the same tenses we do. They think more in terms of what continues from before the present and what is happening now and will always continue to happen.
Here’s the view that all that explanation brings to the resurrection. The new life in the resurrection is not something that happened to Jesus Christ and is going to happen to us. It is something that happened and continues with Jesus Christ and—in our baptism into his death and resurrection—is happening and will continue to happen also to us. Our whole life, our whole attitude and outlook has been turned around by Easter.
The resurrection is not something we merely live for. It is something we live in. It means that our resurrection is not something we merely look forward to. It is something we look forward from. In our participation in Christ’s death and resurrection, we have already passed from death to life;

we have already passed from condemnnation to forgiveness,

from sorrow to joy,

from poverty to riches;

we have already passed from bondage to freedom,

from weakness to strength,

from concern about the future to absolute joy in our
continuing relationship with God.

Come to think of it,

BLESSED EASTER
as you look forward from every breakfast with the risen Christ!

Working In The Kingdom
God’s Love - In Action
“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.” -
I John 3:16
We here at Our Redeemer find great joy in seeing God’s love in action in the mission field we have been called to in the urban community at Utah and Oregon Street located in South St. Louis City. There have also been many occasions when it has not been so joyful. When people in the St. Louis area have said, “Are they (the church) still open?”. I say. “Yes, and God is working hard among His people there.” God’s Spirit is at work opening the hearts and minds of people from the church and community by bringing them to faith through the Word and Sacraments and by meeting people’s needs through love and action programs here at our congregation
The joy and benefits we are receiving by the Holy Spirit include 8 newly baptized children of God, 5 adults in Adult Instruction along with 7 youth in Confirmation. Other joys here at Our Redeemer are how, through our love and action programs (e.g. Jesus ROCKS, Jesus ROCKS Martial Arts, the Friendly Center, the youth Open Recreation) and professional counseling for those in the neighborhood we are able to meet the needs of various age people in our neighborhood.
However, the greatest joy is to be able, through these outreach programs, to share their greatest need: spiritual. That is, the promise of forgiveness, peace, and eternal life for each of them through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Yes, God’s love in action is truly being realized by both our long term members and those new ones who the Holy Spirit has brought to us.
Certainly, there are plans for even more ministry actions in the future. We have plans to have a relationship and outreach with Lutherans for Life which will start on May 15th at 2 PM with a program that offers mentoring and other help in many areas for mothers with newborns or expectant mothers.
The event will include a diaper give-away and tips on pre-natal care. Ruth Kirchhoff will be here heading up this program. Ruth called to ask if any people in our church would agree to send along some baked goods for refreshments and youth will be asked to help distribute flyers. Baby-sitting will be provided and if any of you know a new or expectant mother, please encourage her to participate.
Another effort is being worked on with AARP and United Way to have a station where people who need help with their taxes and can’t afford to pay commercial businesses can come and get their taxes done for free. This is slated to start up in time for next tax season.
Ideas and opportunities keep coming. We welcome your prayers and we rely on your help.

1 John 4

13  By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.
14   We have seen and testify that the Father has (3) sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.

Martial Arts News
We especially want to thank all of the helpers who volunteered their time and talents to make the tournament a great success. This includes: Helen, Sharon, Paula, Keisha, Jasmine, Tina, Debby, Gloria, Luther, and their families. If I forgot anyone, I apologise. Please let me know. Other "Thank Yous" go to Jason Vowel, who demonstrated the use of various weapons. ALso, an exciting addition came from Jermaine "Bam Bam" Andre and his students who not only brought his Ultimate Fighting World Championship belt to show us but also gave a great demonstration of Muay-Thai kick boxing techniques and signed autographs for the participants. Jermain operates a Woman's Self-Awareness Foundation in St. Louis. You can find out more about him, his foundation, other information by going to www.realselfdefense.tv, www,jermaineandre.com, and www.rsmuaythai.com.
There will be a Martial Arts promotion after church service in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, May 23rd after the Bible Study and Information classes. We would like to invite all of our church members and friends to come and support these young people. We will start the event with a free light lunch which will be sponsored by the youth programs. Following the lunch, the youth will demonstrate some of the exercises they regularly do in class. Then, each person who is trying to gain their degree will do the kata that is required for the stage of advancement they are seeking. This program will give all of our folks an opportunity to see what these hard working young people are learning during the martial arts classes.
We really hope to see all of you there. Chris
Minutes of Voter’s Meeting—March 21, 2004
The meeting was called to order by President Fred Bodimer III.
There were 12 members present, 5 guests. The meeting was opened with prayer by Luther DeCuir.

The previous meeting was January 18, 2004. The minutes were included in the last Messenger. A motion was made, seconded and passed to approve the minutes as printed.

Fred Bodimer reviewed the schedule of services coming up
Seder Meal Maundy Thursday, 6:30, meal and service
Good Friday evening service. There was a questioned whether there would be one. Luther will check with Pastor Rall.
There will be a special meeting between Luther DeCuir, Jonathan Kraemer and Pastor Rall.

Elders
Pastors Jonathan Kraemer and Carl Toelke are sharing the services.
Jonathan Kraemer has a problem with his schedule. His mother is ill. He will need to return to Canada to be with his family this summer. Also his wife is pregnant. He needs to cut back on his weekly duties here at Our Redeemer. Right now he is scheduled to be at the church Monday and Thursday evenings.

Luther, Carl and Jonathan are going to schedule a meeting. They need to decide who would do what at Our Redeemer.

The Elders thought one person should do the confirmation classes. Luther could do the confirmation. Carl or Jonathan could continue to do Bible class.

Carl reported we do have a couple of people who have been previously been members. They will start taking communion.

Confirmation. Luther reported there are four young people between the ages of 13 and 15 who could be in the confirmation class. Should they be in the same classes with the adults? The teens could meet after church. It was decided Luther will conduct the adult group after church, and Gloria the young adult group after church. The pastors will continue with Bible class. This would start the Sunday after Easter – April 18.

Elders will discuss the in-between.

Manny and Luther plan to start their visits soon. Manny has had back problems. He is doing Spanish services on Sundays in Springfield, MO.

Treasurer’s Report – Chuck Wuensch

The reports for January 2004 and February 2004 were presented. (copies are attached to the original minutes) A motion was made, seconded and carried to approve the reports as presented.
Luther talked about an interest-free loan for his truck repairs. $2,500 for a rebuilt engine. He does use the truck to tow the trailer for Jesus Rocks.
A motion was made that the church pay $250 and the remainder be an interest-free loan to Luther for repairs. The motion was seconded and passed.
The details of the loan will be worked out and a letter agreement will be signed setting out the repayment schedule, the payments will be deducted from his salary, and also the agreement will state that if for some reason he leaves our employ the entire balance will be due.
The minutes of the previous meeting were corrected. Jonathan Kraemer’s name is spelled Kraemer. Karate classes are Mondays and Thursdays.
Grant--Lutheran Foundation. It was reported a request has been turned in. They need more details.
Gloria brought up the idea of a tax preparation site. Tax preparation for people who cannot afford to have it done. AARP and another group may want to set up a site at Our Redeemer.
Ray Marti brought up the sign idea again, 4 feet x 3 feet. Luther pointed out it was discussed a couple of years ago. We would need a sign big enough for our purpose.

New Business
Luther had information on purchasing a lapel mic system to plug into our system.
VHF - $275-$300. With this we may pick up cell phone calls or CBs.
UHF - $275-$400. We would not pick up the calls.

A motion was made that we purchase the UHF system. Seconded and passed.

Luther received a call from our neighbors. Our lighting system is not working. The mercury lights on the front and side of church have not been working. He told them we would check into it.
Luther received a call from a Presbyterian pastor. Would we be interested in donating church space for a service here at Our Redeemer? There was a question why he hadn’t contacted Curby Memorial Church. Luther will call him back and advise him we are not interested, he will suggest the pastor contact Curby (it sounded like it would be for a youth program).

Seder Meal. Volunteers are needed. Will communion be open to everyone? Luther checked with Carl Toelke. Carl explained how it would be done. It is not actually communion until the last time wine is consumed. Only those who should will take communion. Those not communing will drink grape juice.

There will be an Easter Breakfast, 8:00 – 9:15 a.m.

A motion was made to adjourn. The meeting was closed with the Lord’s Prayer.

Respectfully submitted.

Jane Prahlow

Child Safety Seminar at Our Redeemer
Due to the fact that all of our volunteers were busy with the Seder Meal, Easter Breakfast, and Martial Arts Tournament, we were forced to push the Kids Safe Seminar back a few weeks. However, Our Redeemer staff and volunteers are still committed to reaching out to the community and meet the needs of the residents. Therefore, Chris Holmes and Luther DeCuir will present this free seminar at the church on Saturday, May 8th beginning at 1 PM until 2:30 PM.
The seminar will cover aspects of child safety including preventive practices for child abduction and endangerment. In view of the many local and national events regarding this subject, this seminar will be both timely and helpful for parents, grandparents, teachers, and other caregivers to attend.
Chris Holmes has recently been certified as an agent for Kids Safe Network a Child Protection Specialist and Luther DeCuir, a Licensed Professional Counselor in Missouri, is nationally certified by the National Board of Certified Counselors. He works with the Elementary School Counseling Program in four Lutheran Elementary schools in the City of St. Louis.
You can find out more about the Kids Safe Network by visiting their website at kidssafenetwork.com.
Please call the church office at 314-772-7169 to register for this conference. While registration is not essential, it will help us to know how many people to prepare handouts (and chairs) for. The program will include a taped presentation from Kids Safe Network, comments and additional information from Chris and Luther and some safety technique demonstrations. They also plan to leave time for a question and answer session
Please plan to attend and bring a friend and/or neighbor.

The Spring Rummage Sale will be held on Friday May 14th 8:30 AM –5 PM & Saturday May 15th. 9 AM—Noon Donations are being accepted now until May 14th. Carry up Day is Sun. May 9th after church. Hang up Day is Tuesday, May 11th. All volunteers are greatly appreciated. Matching funds are being contributed by THRIVENT Financial Services.

Concordia Seminary St. Louis has sent out a request for donations to their Food Bank. There has been a tremendous response to the LCMS plea for more men to become pastors. Many of those who are responding are married and have children. The new Deaconess program has brought young women to the Seminary as well. Preparing to become professional church workers places intense financial pressure on these people and the Food Bank is a way to help relieve some of that pressure since they can receive items once or twice a month. Donations can include cash, non-perishable food, soap, paper products, toiletries, and laundry products. Items can be brought to the Seminary which is located at 801 DeMun or call 314-505-7000.
