A brief history of our church
1720
The first German Lutheran farmers settled in the Strasburg area.

1730
The first mention of the Strasburg Lutheran Church for the Beber (Beaver) Creek congregation was recorded by Rev. John Casper Stoever, who ministered to their needs.

1733
The Borough of Strasburg was incorporated.

Jan. 5, 1754
St Michael's congregation was founded, originally meeting in the a 20' x 20' log church known in the Kirchen Buch as the "Old Dutch Church". The remains of this building, located at Route 896 and Iva Road about 1.5 mi southeast of town, no longer exist. The Rev. Johann Gottlieb Engelland became the first Pastor in this building. The church, which was also known as Stoutenberger's Church, was originally shared between the Lutherans and the German Reformed until the latter built their own church in New Providence in 1795/6.

1760
Edward Dougherty donated an acre of land on East Main Street in Strasburg, PA to the church. The land was originally used as a cemetary, the earliest marked grave belonging to Elizabeth Pfoutz (died 1767). Legend has it that Mr. Dougherty is buried under our front sidewalk on East Main Street.

1780
The Church purchased a unique set of pewter baptismal and Communion vessels that are used to this day on a regular basis.

Aug. 25, 1806
The cornerstone of the present-day red brick structure was laid, but the stone's whereabouts today remain a mystery. The Romanesque and Georgian-style building was the first church located in the borough of Strasburg and was designed by the Rev. G. H. E. Muhlenberg after Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster with influences from Zion Lutheran Church in Philadelphia. The original sanctuary was two stories tall with a choir loft/balcony on the second story. For a while, both a Lutheran and Methodist congregation shared these quarters. The Old Dutch log church outside of town was converted into a school house.

Aug 15, 1816
After ten years of construction, the official dedication of the new church building took place.

1816-1835
A lottery was held to raise money for a brick tower and steeple. After two winners emerged (one winning ticket was apparently a forgery), a lawsuit ensued, resulting in the church having to pay both parties. In order to cover the debt, the partially-constructed tower was razed and the bricks were sold. Some of the bricks wound up in the Strasburg Academy across the street.

1816-1860
The Rev. John Jacob Strein served as the longest pastorate in the church's storied history.

1819
Michael Withers, Sr., a congregational member, donated a pipe organ to the church that was made in his Lime Valley farmhouse. This served as the congregation's principal instrument for nearly a century (until 1910). During many of these years, a pair of "jingle socks" were used to collect the offering.

Dec. 8, 1822
Although the church had secured its charter on Mar. 27, 1817, the congregational constitution remained unwritten until this date.

1865
The first services conducted in English were performed. Prior to this time, only German was used. Both English and German were routinely employed until the year 1896.

1917-1966
Beginning with the pastorate of Rev. Wallace R. Knerr, St Michael's and Mt Eden Churches were united to form the Strasburg parish.

1919
The interior of the church was remodeled and divided into two floors, with the balcony level becoming the main sanctuary and the first floor accomodating the Sunday school.

Apr. 19, 1998
The new pipe organ was dedicated. The organ was built almost completely by the members of the congregation from 1993-1997. The various parts of the instrument were acquired from three separate organs: St Paul's United Methodist Church (York), Susquehanna University (Selinsgrove), and Linden Hall Girls School (Lititz).

2003
The Rev. Robert R. Wegehoft, the former pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clinton, IA, became the church's 38th minister.

Jan. 4, 2004
St Michael's Evangelical Lutheran Church celebrated the 250th anniversary of its founding with a special service and an Amish lunch.
