Lent Theme 2010: “Major Promises from the Minor Prophets”
(from the book, God Isn’t Finished with Us Yet by James Harnish)The Minor Prophets are: Hosea, Amos, Micah, Jonah, Nahum, Zephaniah, Habbakuk, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi, and Joel. Theses little books, which are tucked away in the closing pages of the Old Testament, are largely unknown and unused by people who wonder why they are even there. When brought onto center stage, these prophets reveal messages that are profoundly contemporary and powerfully relevant for our times. From the lips of forgotten prophets, we hear poetry that can lift us out of discouragement and into hope. In their struggle with oppression, injustice, political corruption, and personal morality, we find renewed strength for the struggles that confront men and women who seek God’s justice in every age. Out of the depths of their absolute faith in Yahweh, the God of the Covenant, flows a deep river of living water to quench the thirst of our souls. As we encounter their calling to be God’s spokespersons in their age, we experience the calling to become God’s prophets in our own.
