Worship During Lent and Holy Week 2010
Lent Theme 2010: “Major Promises from the Minor Prophets”
(from the book, God Isn’t Finished with Us Yet by James Harnish)

The Minor Prophets are: Hosea, Amos, Micah, Jonah, Nahum, Zephaniah, Habbakuk, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi, and Joel. Theses little books, which are tucked away in the closing pages of the Old Testament, are largely unknown and unused by people who wonder why they are even there. When brought onto center stage, these prophets reveal messages that are profoundly contemporary and powerfully relevant for our times. From the lips of forgotten prophets, we hear poetry that can lift us out of discouragement and into hope. In their struggle with oppression, injustice, political corruption, and personal morality, we find renewed strength for the struggles that confront men and women who seek God’s justice in every age. Out of the depths of their absolute faith in Yahweh, the God of the Covenant, flows a deep river of living water to quench the thirst of our souls. As we encounter their calling to be God’s spokespersons in their age, we experience the calling to become God’s prophets in our own.

The Haiti Earthquake: How You Can Help

Many of you are asking how you can help the people of Haiti.

The immediate needs in Haiti are for food, water, and medical supplies, and these needs are best supplied through the major relief organizations such as the American Red Cross, Lutheran World Relief, or ELCA Disaster Response. We encourage support for these organizations. Thrivent Financial will match donations to Lutheran World Relief and ELCA Disaster Response with $1 in matching funds for every $2 donated. Donations to these organizations can be made through their websites, www.lwr.org and www.elca.org, or through www.thrivent.com.

In the coming weeks and months we will ask for your help in financing the repair and rebuilding needed at our mission interests in Haiti, the Christianville Mission and the International Village of Hope, as well as the ongoing support that is needed to sustain these ministries. We hope and pray that our Nativity family will generously support these efforts.

Donations may be placed in the offering on Sunday mornings (checks made out to “Nativity Lutheran Church”) and designated as gifts for “IVOH” or “Haiti Mission”.

Donations may also be mailed directly to IVOH at the address below (checks made out to “international Village of Hope“):

International Village of Hope, Inc
6252 Commercial Way
PMB 163
Weeki Wachee, FL 34613

The Nativity Mission & Outreach Team and the directors of the International Village of Hope gratefully appreciate donations in any amount.
