In August, Nativity’s Book Club read and discussed Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead, the 2005 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. It’s the story of a 76-year-old preacher in Gilead, Iowa, in 1956, who writes a letter to his seven-year-old son, leaving an account of himself for the son who will never really know him.
In September, the Book Club will read Barbara Brown Taylor’s 2010 book, An Altar in the World – A Geography of Faith. She is a gifted writer and preacher, who sees the holy in everything. Her twelve chapters mine the potentially sacred meaning of simple daily activities, such as walking, paying attention, not working on the Sabbath day, hanging laundry, standing in line at the grocery store, and walking a moonlit path with one’s spouse.
The Book Club meets monthly on a Friday night (7-9 PM) in the home of one of its members. The next meeting is scheduled for September 23. New members are welcome! If you are interested, you may contact one of the pastors or the church office.
